Are there any parishes that still publish the banns? I miss reading them in each week’s bulletin.

Some of the churches I attended over the summer published banns in the bulletin. We haven’t done so in our parish in the 17 years I’ve been here.

Some jurisdictions don’t require a marriage license if banns are published.

I married in France. The banns were published in the bulletin prior to our wedding, though I believe they have not been required by the Church since 1983.

On a related note, French law requires the publication of the banns for every civil wedding…which is every French wedding, since only civil marriages are legally recognized in France and everyone wishing to get married must do so civilly even if a religious ceremony is to be celebrated as well). So in our case, the banns were published both in the parish and at city hall.

In small rural parishes banns might still be useful but in areas with large populations where people pop into one parish or another for various reasons they are much less so.

I said no banns had been published in the 17 years since I’ve been here but I was wrong. Banns were published once, at the request of the marrying parish. One of the parties had been baptized in our parish. Nobody knew the party or remembered the family so publishing banns here did not serve the purpose intended: soliciting people who might know of an impediment for the wedding.

I thought it was interesting to hear my parents say that on the Sundays when their banns were published many couples opted to go to Mass elsewhere rather than submit to the stares.
