Smiling in the communion line

I can’t imagine walking down the aisle to receive communion with a big grin on my face. It is such a solemn moment. We have just been to Calvary, and now we are about the receive the risen Lord. And I know that I am completely unworthy of receiving him, just as we say right before that time. It is only because of his great sacrifice and his grace that I am able to walk down the aisle to become one with him. It is such a momentous occasion, something so awesome that we can’t begin to really understand it. Smiling would seem to be so out of place. Smiling is what I do when I greet friends, see little babies or animals. Going into the presence of my Creator fills me with too much awe and wonder to be smiling like a Chesire Cat.

Here are the three Fatima children, who received Holy Communion from an angel. They were told by Our Lady of Fatima that they would go to heaven. They saw a vision of hell, where poor sinners go who have no one to pray for them. They changed their former ways from dancing and playing childhood games to ways of prayer, penance, and giving their lunch to the poor.

Not often do we see the facial expressions from actual photographs of people waiting to be declared saints. Jacinta and Francisco are currently both known as Blesseds since they’ve been beatified on May 13th, 2000, and are still going through the canonization process.

Here’s another of Jacinta:

And here’s another of Francisco:

And one more, of Lucia and Jacinta:

Beautiful photographs! Thank you for posting those.

When I approach Jesus in Holy Communion I am usually asking Him to have mercy on me.

people are normally prayerful or reflective

not only in the communion line, but people don’t usually smile in church except during the Sign of Peace or when Father cracks a joke during his Homily

besides, sometimes it may be taken as a bad sign, that some people may think you’re not taking the Eucharist seriously

on the other hand, there’s nothing forbidding one to smile

Wow…in the second and fourth pictures, Jacinta has a one of the most serious and piercing facial expressions I’ve ever seen. Her eyes tell it all. Best post so far…

I have to agree with the guy who mentioned pictures of Our Lord and Our Lady with big goofy smiles. It’s more of the “Be Happy! Jesus loves you” nonsense that goes around nowadays. Of course, not the fact that Our Lord loves us, but the false joy that we now see where it’s all smiles and hugs instead of a dreadful realization of the chance we all have of falling into hell if we don’t amend our lives.

If you are noticing expressions on people’s faces as you are making your way up to receive the King of the Universe then your mind isn’t where it should be.
