Is it just me or does every photograph of a modern Saint seem alive? They have this “mona lisa smile” and loving eyes that seem to talk to you. I’ve noticed this for quite a while now and was wondering does anyone else feel and see this? Tim

Good observation, Tim. I just notice that none of the saints show their teeth while smiling. 😃

Interesting Top. Thanks for posting the photos. I had heard somewhere that in the olden days smiling (showing your teeth) was considered a sign of aggression. I’m not sure if this is true, but rarely do I see an old photo with a teethy smile.

Hehe, the picture of St. Faustina looks like she’s trying to hold back a laugh.

I love that picture of St. Josemaria Escriva. Something about it just makes his love shine through.

I agree, Tim. When I was in the process of entering the Church I noticed the contentment and happiness on the faces of people that I considered “holy” and good. It also seems to me that those who dedicate their lives to God seem to look much younger. Then again, you have Mother Teresa. But, I have noticed that a lot of sisters I come in contact with and older people seem to look years younger then what they actually are. Not many wrinkles. Always smiling. Happy.

I have been thinking about the act of smiling a lot lately, especially since reading the letters of Mother Teresa. She always wished to smile. And even when things were going wrong she would smile.

"Long face, rough manner, ridiculous appearance, unfriendly attitude. Is that how you hope to inspire others to follow Christ?” - St. Josemaria Escriva, The Way, #661

“God, deliver me from sullen saints.” - St. Teresa of Avila

“Everytime you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.” - Bl. Mother Teresa

Is he smoking? I realize that there are saints that did smoke.
I can’t really tell. I just assumed he was making a face.

But, I do know of some prayer cards which have this picture on it. I’ll see if I can get a look at those, and if they’re clearer, tell whether he is or not.

I am looking at his fingers…

Mat’ Maria Skobstova would have a beer and a smoke in Paris in her Orthodox habit! The Orthodox nuns are not active like ours are. They are totally contemplative…then anyway!
