Smithers character to come out of closet

I don’t know if this is a big deal. I mean everyone knew he was gay. And the fact that he’s also shown as a real sycophantic weirdo is not doing the gay-movement any favors. So yeah. Don’t worry too much about it. It’s actually kinda lame. But then that’s the Simpsons for you. After all these years none of those twerps have learned a single thing anyway. Just please tell me the episode won’t be full of rainbows. It’s gotten so I can’t stand the sight of those bloody rainbows. Ugh.

It’s one thing for a piece of fiction to merely have a homosexual character. It’s another thing for that same piece of fiction to force the homosexual agenda down one’s throat.
 
What surprises me is that this hadn’t already happened.

“The Simpsons” have a long history of incorporating gay themes. I doubt this is even the most overt.
 
How can a cartoon character have a sexual orientation. That show is acting ridiculous. Even though it is not a children’s show, children do watch it. They should not have that agenda on television.

Yeah, there was an episode where Moe turned the bar into a gay bar. I think that’s been the most overt so far.
 
I don’t think I’ve seen an episode in eight years, but even back then they were pretty obvious that Smithers was gay. It isn’t a very flattering portrayal, in my opinion. I don’t think Simpsons is pushing a gay agenda. I think they are acknowledging what’s already part of our culture and trying to find a way to make fun of it. Which has pretty much been the MO since the show was started.

What surprises me most is that the Simpsons is still on TV. We haven’t had cable (or even basic tv through antenna) for years and watch only what we can stream online. The Simpsons hasn’t been on my list for streaming and I honestly thought that it had been cancelled. I can’t say I’m surprised they’ve chosen to latch onto the latest PC craze.

Indeed. They still come back year after year. 😛

But it isn’t as though they are just now latching onto this. Way back in Season 8 (they’re on season 27 now), there was the episode “Homer’s Phobia” whereby Homer was introduced to a gay man and initially likes him until he finds out he is gay and then starts treating him terribly. Of course, Homer then learns his lesson by the end of the episode (and, really, the lesson to not treat gay people terribly is not a bad lesson).

I recall even back then, though, that the episode didn’t seem like it was coming from left field. They’ve had the subtext of Smithers being gay practically since the show started.

How is satirizing a cartoon character’s SSA forcing an agenda?
 
I thought I recalled hearing about it (though I didn’t see the episode), so I double checked. 10 years ago in Season 16, there was an episode “There’s Something About Marrying” where Marge’s sister, Patty “came out” as a lesbian, Springfield legalizes same sex “marriage”, and Homer becomes a “minister” and starts officiating at gay weddings (to make money).

This was 10 years ago. I cannot imagine Smithers’ “outing” topping being anything but restrained by comparison.

I think we must live on different planets. Political and social satire are the red meat for the Simpson’s.😃
 
Is anyone still watching The Simpsons? LOL!!!

If it makes anyone feel any better, I know a man who converted to Catholicism because he watched the episode “The Father, Son, and the Holy Guest Star”. He is a hard-core traditional Catholic to this day.

At least there’s that…
