Indeed. I would have been more impressed had they done something like this twenty years ago. Now it merely serves to show how behind the times and socially irrelevant the Simpsons has become.

It’s only a problem because it seems sort of cheap. I mean it seems sort of a cheap shot to take him out of the closet now. I don’t know. I guess it’s a ratings thing. And I suppose that’s their business. That’s the way they stay on the air. I’m just playing Captain Obvious now. Because I’m tired. But not sleeping.

If it makes anyone feel any better, I know a man who converted to Catholicism because he watched the episode “The Father, Son, and the Holy Guest Star”. He is a hard-core traditional Catholic to this day.

Yeah, I pretty much stopped watching around 1995. I think the show jumped the shark with the Mickey Rooney episode.

I looked it up: Sept, 24, 1995.

Wow–I have a wicked good memory!😃

I liked that episode! 😛 I place the shark jumping two years later in season 9. 😃
 
Wasn’t the suspicion that Waylon Smithers was a homosexual all along? When I was a teen my friends and I wondered aloud about the character’s sexuality.
 
I’m always surprised when someone tells me they still watch The Simpsons. I haven’t watched a new episode this millennium. I looked on IMDB and saw that we only watched a couple episodes in 1999 and it looks like we stopped watching it regularly after the '97 season.

That being said, I didn’t Smithers being gay was ever really a secret. I’m guessing him coming out is a ratings grab and meant to capitalize on the current political environment. If not for the occasional headline about the show, I wouldn’t know that it was still on the air.
 
I always thought the Simpsons were supposed to portray really really bad morals, language, actions, etc, but the times I have watched, dont know the episode, but Homer had a chance to cheat on Marge with an attractive younger woman, and by the end, he chooses to do the right thing, and remain faithful, even though he would have never been caught, another episode, Homer was offered drugs, he choose not to do them. This is all great in reality, but isnt it totally opposite of what the Simpsons are really supposed to be?

Seems like when the show was new, it was really raunchy and immoral, but they have kind of morphed into characters who generally do the right thing (which is equally strange, as Hollywood is not known for being moral), why would they care if Homer cheated on Marge or not, isnt that the popular thing now, just do whatever makes you happy, no matter who it hurts?

According to Wikipedia, they’ve been renewed through this season and next season. So they will at least make it through season 28, during which they will air their 600th (:eek:) episode.

I haven’t watched much this millennium either, but I have caught some episodes here and there over the past few seasons (I had to watch the Futurama crossover episode last season :o). It seems to me the show is better now than it was 10 years ago, but not nearly as good as it was 20 years ago.

But it’s still hit and miss. Sometimes you do get those episodes that are right on point and even tugs at your heart strings. But then sometimes you just sit and wonder what the writers are thinking.

I think you need to re-watch the early episodes again. Homer isn’t amoral. He’s a flawed character but one who cares about his family and generally tries to do the right thing. The first season included plotlines like Homer working as a mall Santa to have enough money to buy Christmas presents for his family, selling the TV to pay for family counseling, disconnecting their stolen cable due to the promptings of his daughter, etc. The earlier episodes definitely went for more of a typical family sitcom feel.

People say the same things about South Park, but then most people don’t understand irony and can’t seem to grasp the concept of satire. Irony is a pretty difficult concept I guess.

Personally I’ve never watched an episode of the Simpsons. I’m a huge South Park fan. I just think the satire is better, as it tends to be more subtle. There are always the people who will watch it and laugh at the funny situations and jokes and cursing, but the true genius of the show (I’d assume Simpsons is a similar scenario) is in its ability to take a current issue and frame it in a way that actually makes you consider the issues being discussed. I actually watched “The Simpsons Already Did It” last night. But anyway, I appreciate any satirical work that has no line it won’t cross. It’s nice to see a relatively unbiased opinion.

As to the OP, I don’t see how this is forcing any kind of agenda. The Simpsons is actually rather tame compared to most shows nowadays, as far as political stances go.

Hollywoods versions of what is ‘right’ and moral is FAR different than how many Christians see it though.

There is a channel called WXXX that shows The Simpsons one after the other nearly all of the time.
 
Next thing we know Oscar the Grouch from Sesame Street will be coming out of the trash can:eek:
