Smoking weed and vaping

Both of these things are ok as long as you don’t do it to excess. Where “excess” begins however is hard to judge. With marijuana especially, with daily use you build up tolerance and before you know it, you are spending a lot of money on it and neglecting your responsibilities. At that point it would become sinful.

With marijuana like with alcohol, another factor is whether you remain in control of your will. If you do it to relax at home or to help you sleep, it wouldn’t be a sin. If you do stupid or dangerous things while high, then it would be a sin, yes.

This is provided you don’t break any laws since pot is illegal in many places.

I’d rather not indulge in habits or activities that will harm my body or mind.

Is smoking weed and vaping everyday a mortal sin?
Spiritually speaking, a priest has told me during a confession that taking any psychedelic drug with mind altering effects is an easy invitation for demonic possession. That advice among many from different priests has changed my mind about Marijuana.

Since the long term effects of vaping aren’t yet known, it may well be a mortal sin
How would it be a mortal sin? Things that are unhealthy aren’t necessarily sinful. Smoking cigarettes is unhealthy and that’s very well documented, but I don’t think anyone thinks it’s sinful. A bad idea, sure, but not a sin per se.

Which is wise, and I commend you for taking care of your health, but it has nothing to do with sin. Someone who needs to lose 10 pounds or occasionally forgets to floss doesn’t need to confess those things.

Some people vape on their path to quit smoking cigarettes. There are people who use pot who are on chemo, or have serious medical conditions.

Anyone who thinks weed is worse, in any way, than alcohol is uneducated and misinformed on the topic. I’m not recommending everyone go get baked 24/7, but it’s objectively less debilitating than alcohol. Less addictive too.

Besides, we all know the weed grew from the grave of Solomon. Jah bless!

Has the Church made an official statement about vaping? Since the long term effects of vaping aren’t yet known, it may well be a mortal sin. But unless or until the Church says something about it, we really don’t know.
Well, smoking has bad long term effects and it is not a sin, let alone a mortal sin. I would imagine vaping is in a similar category.

I would have to agree with this as well but I suppose it would be a good idea to speak to a knowledgeable priest as well. God bless… Gary

Recreational intoxication is gravely sinful. It is sorcery. Drugs which can be used without altering your state of consciousness (e.g. caffeine, nicotine, alcohol) can be licitly used in moderation, but we have a duty to keep our bodies healthy, for they are the Temples of God. I would counsel people to start vaping only as a means of quitting smoking, for indeed vaping is far safer than smoking, but it is not safe.

Yes, but cigarettes are literally radioactive. It’s estimated that 30-50% of the carcinogenic effect of tobacco comes from the radon daughters that accumulate in tobacco leaves.

I can’t see any use for that besides a stop-smoking placebo. The act of smoking is itself addictive, apart from the nicotine, and vaping can sate that urge. Nevertheless, it is the nicotine which causes the pleasurable effect of smoking, so I can’t understand why a non-smoker would start vaping using a nicotine-free fluid.

No, though disobeying lawful authority is a sin in its own right. Even if doing so is legal, consuming intoxicating quantities of drugs for recreational purposes is the sin of sorcery.

Clandestine production of and trafficking in drugs are scandalous practices. They constitute direct co-operation in evil, since they encourage people to practices gravely contrary to the moral law.
I’ve certainly drunken my share of alcohol, but I’ve never used illegal drugs, smoked, vaped, or whatever. But, I also think we must consider the transition point of the above. Making a drug illegal makes it lucrative and raises crime around it. There are somethings, possibly marijuana, that have less detrimental effect on society being legal. We also don’t gain much from stuffing our jails with addicts and low level (read disposable) drug dealers. We need to think more smartly about how we address this and I don’t think a good solution has to be contrary to the above.

The Greek translated “sorcery” is “pharmakia.” Sorcery is the use of drugs for intoxicating or other destructive purposes, as opposed to witchcraft, which is the invocation of evil spirits for one’s own agenda.

I disagree. I’ve known many cigar and pipe smokers in my lifetime and none of them do it for pleasure. They themselves have admitted their addiction. All started off smoking cigarettes and moved up to smoking cigars and pipes. They all have said that if they had it to do over again, they wouldn’t.

As for alcohol, you don’t have to be a smoker to indulge in those.

The Catechism defines drug as that substance which “inflicts very grave damage on human health and life” and which is not being used on “strictly therapeutic grounds”.

Examples are:
e-Cigarette use for some (respiratory and gastrointestinal conditions, heart problems, nicotine poisoning)
Marijuana (negatively effects hippocampus, memory function)
Scopolamine a.k.a. Devil’s Breath
Ecstacy (MDMA)
Heroin
Crack cocaine
Crystal Meth
AH-7921 (synthetic opioid)
Flakka a.k.a., Gravel (synthetic cathinone)
Bath salts (mephedrone, methylone, and methylenedioxypyrovalerone) such as Ivory Wave, Vanilla Sky, and Doves Red
Whoonga
Krokodil (Desomorphine)
