Are there any “Snake-Handlers” here?I’m not being facetious I am truly curious.Is there a name for the denomination(s)who practise this?
 
I really felt like raising my hand on this for grins and giggles since I do go to a Pentecostal / Charismatic church. In fact I would have if the originator of this thread been my 12 year old cousin whose chain I love to yank.

But anyway, I felt convicted for lying. So unfortunately no, I am not a snake handler. Unless my episode as an 8 year old where I picked up a common garter snake and started dangling it in front of the teenage girls next door who were sunning themselves outside counts as “Snake Handling”.

But maybe there are some others though on this forum, Who knows.

But I doubt it since the “Snake Handler” churches are about 2-3 in number in the back hills of Kentucky or Tennessee. I doubt whether the attendees of these churches kan evin spel, much less use the internet.

My dad went to a “snake handler” Holiness Pentacostal church when he was a young man…he played guitar and sang gospel songs for small churches in Texas…he didn’t know it was that type of church however until they brought out the sacks and dumped snakes on the floor…he is deathly afraid of snakes and spiders…so he jumped up and screamed and ran to the back of the room and watched.

He said men and women would hold them…kiss them…wrap them around their necks and “carried on”.

They use the verse at the end of Mark which states that the sign of believers will be that they take up serpents and drink poison and will not be harmed.
 
There’s a pretty good article about them here. Since it is illegal in all but one state, they tend to be pretty secretive.

I almost thought you said that people from TN and KY can’t spell, until I took a second look, and realize you said the attendees of these churches. East TN girl here has to defend her peeps! 😃

I have met a few people who go to these churches, and they are… very colorful and interesting people. Most are very sinscere in their beliefs. When they talk about snake handling, I just quietly say “You shall not tempt the Lord your God” a few times. Then I politely change the subject. I think snakes are great creatures and some are actually really pretty, but I’d much rather them be behind a glass wall.

There are some in northern Alabama, too.

Ain’t no way. Besides, didn’t someone say something about putting God to the test?
 
Some of those videos were very disturbing-not necessarily the snake-handling but the physical and probably emotional hysteria which seemed to accompany the practise.One woman writhed on the ground in a snakelike fashion and SEEMED to me to be possessed.How does this differ from voodoo rites or African animist ceremonies which result in spiritual possession?I hate to be ethnocentric,but…🤷
