When Sinead O’Conner ripped up a picture of Pope John Paul II some years ago, there was a huge outrage. Do you think that similar response would occur today with Pope Benedict XVI, when criticism of the RCC and the papacy seems to be much greater than it was then?

Overall, I would think so(maybe)…

All I know is that if it happened again we wouldn’t burn anything down, or blow anything up, or even cut off someone’s head. 😃

I think I would have to punch whoever was responsible in the nose, though. They can consider it corporal mortification.
 
I think so. But Pope John Paul II was loved by just about everyone, even non Catholics. I don’t know if Pope Benedict has the same effect on people.
 
Not as big as for JPII - especially in light of this Popes quotes about Islam and offering a “non apology apology.” I dont think the reaction would be the same as when it happened to Sinead. I disagree with what she did, but the knee jerk reactions across the country she recieved was nowhere near proportionate to what she did. Tear up a picture is proportionate to getting death threats, being spit at and on, as well as having things thrown at you while in concert? Gotta love how “forgiving Catholics” reacted to that. :rolleyes:

Nobody took into account her ethnicity, her background, her country, and the way things were shaped for her. Was she wrong? Yes. Did she deserve the backlash in such proportion? Nope. The same as with the Dixie Chicks.
 
JP2 had been Pope longer when that happened too so it’s too early to judge how well Benedict will be liked.

Oh yes, she was the victim… :rolleyes: By no means am I excusing death threats or spitting, but she deserved to be booed offstage and criticized.We need to put a stop to the victim mentality that runs rampant through this culture and we could start by refusing to make such excuses for so-called celebrities who shoot off their mouths and expect the rest of us to just listen with wide-eyed wonder.
 
Since she received death threats and was spat at she did become the victim. Thats more distressing than even tearing up a picture of a Pope imo
