Also Bill I think the "Holy Catholic Church is spelt with a small “h” and “c” meaning the universal or “catholic” Church that Jesus founded. Same thing of course but there is a distinction that needs to be addressed here. Pls correct me if Im wrong. Im Catholic btw but very poor in practice for which I need prayers Would be nice if it was that easy though

Thanks, Bill for posting the Apostles’ Creed. You read my mind. I was going to do the same thing because so many posters seem unaware of what Catholics and Christians believe.
Most or many Christians believe and say the Apostles’ Creed.
However, when they do the H C are not capitalized. However, in Catholic prayer book it is capitallized. When we say it it is capitalized!
A non-Catholic Christian friend once mentioned to me that they say the Apostles’ Creed and added “but we say it with catholic with a small c”.

The Athanasian Creed

This is the catholic faith; which except a man believe faithfully and firmly, he cannot be saved.

By not putting up the Nicene Creed, you have excluded Eastern Catholics.

The Apostles Creed, while true as far as it goes, is only a local Western baptismal creed, and is not used by the Eastern Churches.

Anyway with the Creed above after the word “buried” are the words “He descended into hell”. I remember this distinctly because as I could never understand why “hell”. If there were souls in hell why were they there? This indicated to me that they were judged already so why would Jesus bother going there? Why does the Church use this word if “hell” is not where Jesus descended to?

The word can be translated multiple ways. Jesus did not desend into the hell of the damned. He went to the abode of the Fathers, a waiting room in the afterlife until heaven was opened. The scriptures talk about him preaching to the spirits in prison.

Most modern translations do not use hell so that there is no confusion

I understood as a younster (Catholic raised and schooled and guilty of not practising what I believe) that this was not the hell of the damned as you say but limbo or purgatory and yes it certainly is confusing to use hell in today’s translation. However in my parish the wording of the Creed with the word “hell” in it is still use. No change from my childhood.

My problem with this is it implies souls were already judged by God if some souls were already in hell and others were in purgatory after all is not Purgatory a temporary place before the assurance of Heaven? Though I dont understand this fully I do trust in His Church for the answers. Peace

I havent been to Church for a while and Im questioning whether this is correct. I may be getting the Apostles Creed and the Nicene Creed confused because I notice, Bill, you included the line “He descended into hell” in the Apostles Creed. You are close to being correct. It was a special, temporary place where those who would go to heaven had to wait until paradise was re-opend. Unlike Purgatory, it ceased to exist with the death and Resurection of Jesus.

It may still be hell in the Missal. I thought we said “dead”

the english translation is not so perfect i dont think.

the portuguese translation says. descended to the mansion of the dead. never hell. so i dont know the hell comes from.
another thing is that it is capitalized One Holy Catholic Apostolic Churh. at my parish the RCIA teacher said that it is wrong to capitalize. it must be with small c. so i dont understand.

The Nicene Creed begins with “We” as used in the Liturgies during Mass in the Profesion of faith. Thanks for posting this, I just wanted to mention, if any one ever wanted to know all the doctrines of the Catholic church, need just to look at our profession of faith in both the apostles and Nicene Creeds.
