Okay. So tonight I was out shopping with my girlfriends, you know, usual Saturday night routine. And it’s sort of a welcome-home party for my friend Kelly. This is a tight-knit, Catholic group of friends I have here.

So at around 10:30, they decided to go see Wedding Crashers, which, yes, was rated morally offensive. But they all really wanted me to come, and I didn’t want to spoil the party, so I agreed.

Some parts were funny. However, that did not make up for the nudity and vulgarity that made me, an American teenage girl, want to crawl under my seat. :o

I’m just feeling very confused. I mean, this didn’t seem like something I should be watching. But am I being overly sensitive? My family and friends think I’m being silly. Am I? I could use some perspective.

I read from your profile that you are about 18. I would be distressed if I found out my daughter had attended such a movie. Don’t beat yourself up, but be cautious about what you see in the future. You may wish to avail yourself of Confession.

No. Not a prude and certainly not being silly. I am 41, and I avoid movies with vulgarity, nudity, and obscene language. When I was your age, I did the same. I was made fun of and ridiculed by some. However, the more I was ridiculed, the stronger I became in my convictions. In doing so, I became a role model for others. I’ll bet others of your friends found the movie offensive as well, but were not strong enough to say anything. What an opportunity to witness your Catholic Faith to others!!!

My grandma used to say “Junk going in (your mind)----junk coming out”. Fill your head with good things, and you’ll keep your soul beautiful and pure.

For what it’s worth, I think you’ve been blessed with a well formed conscience which really shows a certain sensitivity at not wanting to offend Christ. No one could ever think thats a bad thing. Like JKirk said, I wouldn’t beat yourself up but you might want to get to confession next time the opprotunity comes up.

God Bless, you’re on the right track.👍

Oh, thanks so much for the replies!!!

I totally agree about going to Confession- but I won’t be able to until Saturday.

Do you all think I can still recieve Communion at Mass this morning??

I know you were asking JKirk, but I’ll go ahead and give an answer. Since you did not commit a mortal sin by seeing the movie, you may receive Communion today. Avail yourself of confession ASAP to confess venial sins. Venial sins don’t cause the death of your soul as do mortal sins. However, they will make your soul sick and weak, so that you have less of an ability to avoid mortal sin. In addition, you receive many graces from going to Confession----and that’s what we all want, in order to withstand temptation in this world:thumbsup:

I would think yes, it isn’t as though she were precisely aware of what she was going to see. I’d make a good act of contrition, thougn, and ask Jesus to help you see Him on the Cross rather than the images that remain from that movie.

Sounds to me like you are a virtuous young lady. Nothing is more beautiful in a woman than virtue. That is why Mary was the most beautiful woman who ever lived.

If your friends laugh, let them. Even they will know that, deep down inside, they are envious.

I would just like to clarify one thing. Attending Mass, includes within the inherent graces, the forgiveness of veniel sins. Blessing oneself with holy water actually also erases veniel sin (as long as you are spiritually disposes…ie: truly sorry for you sins, etc.).

However, that said, you should still go to Confession and bring this situation to your confessor. Frequent confession, even of just veniel sins is still confession and carries graces needed to strengthen and renew us. As this disturbs you so much it is the hand of God telling you that you need to unburden yourself through the sacrament.

Even though you will be forgiven and able to recieve communion, confession is still a good, pious, and encouraged practice.

Regarding whether your sin in seeing the move is mortal or veniel, however, we here cannot judge. Only you know your true intent, what you really knew about the movie before seeing it, etc. Do you know it is actually a sin to put the fear of being disliked or ridiculed above what God tells us is right? (veniel sin).

If in fact you have committed a mortal sin, you may recieve communion but only with the honest intention of attending Confession ASAP. If you do not attend confession after committing a mortal sin and recieve the body, blood, soul and divinity of Christ, then you have multiplied the sin and sinned against the body and blood. With a firm intent to complete the condition of Confession, however, you will recieve the graces of Communion as soon as you are fully reconciled.

Hope I explained that in a way that makes sense. I learned this a few years ago while watching “Web of Faith” on EWTN. 😃

Plus, good friends wouldn’t laugh at you for striving to be virtuous. If anything, they’d be some of the people who would be helping you down the road to purity of body, mind, and soul. Those friends who really care for you - and your spiritual life - are priceless.

This is not quite clear to me. If a person is aware of having done a mortal sin, they should not go up for communion until after they go to confession. Confession first, then receive.

You may be thinking about some type of extreme circumstance, like war? Or are you thinking of if they are not aware of having done a mortal sin, like they forgot or something?

Stick up for what you believe in and at least you can say to your friends that ever since I saw “Wedding Crashers” I don’t want to see movies like this.
I haven’t seen the movie and the movie title itself doesn’t sound nice at all.

True, but let’s not forget that 18 years of age is a full fleged adult in the USA!.

You are not a prude. You have a well-formed conscience and just wanted to be with your friends, who you assumed were like-minded. I am older than 40, and I won’t go to see the Wedding Crashers, either. In fact, the last movie I saw was Madaggascar. There has been nothing worth seeingthis summer.

IN MY OPINION, you maybe comitted a venial sin. If Saturday is your normal confession time, save it for Saturday and let your confessor be the judge.

I just looked it up in the CCC. Yes, it appears that one can only recieve Communion having committed a mortal sin under the extremes of sacramental exile. (my term 😃 )

There is a lot here so if I find more I’ll post it, but just stick with the truth that we should never go to communion in a state of mortal sin.

I’m sure I heard that is is ok if we intend to go to Confession ASAP, but the passage I found in the CCC contradicts that, so I’ll go with what I found in writing, not what I at least thought I heard. Personally, I don’t go to communion if I think I’ve committed mortal sin but my parish has ample and ampelist opportunity for confession.

Sorry for the confusion (mine). :o

People here, although the have good intentions, are misinforming you. Yes, you are a prude.

But don’t fret… As good and faithful Catholics we’re supposed to be “prudes” from the yardstick of modern mainstream culture.

prude n. One who is excessively concerned with being or appearing to be proper, modest, or righteous.

[French, short for *prude femme, virtuous woman : Old French prude, feminine of prud, virtuous; see proud + French femme, woman (from Latin fēmina; see feminine).]

WORD HISTORY Being called a prude is rarely considered a compliment, but if we dig into the history of the word prude, we find that it has a noble past. The change for the worse took place in French. French prude first had a good sense, “wise woman,” but apparently a woman could be too wise or, in the eyes of some, too observant of decorum and propriety. Thus prude took on the sense in French that was brought into English along with the word, first recorded in 1704. The French word prude was a shortened form of prude femme (earlier in Old French prode femme), a word modeled on earlier preudomme, “a man of experience and integrity.” The second part of this word is, of course, homme, “man.” Old French prod, meaning “wise, prudent,” is from Vulgar Latin prōdis with the same sense. Prōdis in turn comes from Late Latin prōde, “advantageous,” derived from the verb prōdesse, “to be good.” Despite this history filled with usefulness, profit, wisdom, and integrity, prude has become a term of reproach.

I’m a prude and proud of it! Ever heard of being “prudent?” 😛

I do go to see some R rated movies, but only the ones that are rated that way for something like violence. Violence I can handle, but the sight of even a bare backside turns my face into a shade like cherry tomato. I wouldn’t watch anything with nudity if I could help it.

Some people call me a sissy, but I like to go to movies like “Driving Miss Daisy” and “LIfe is Beautiful.” ( I also went to see “Troy” and “Pirates of the Caribbean,” but… well… no comment).

Prudishness is something we need more of.

I’m in total agreement!:clapping:

Maybe you’re prudish, but you’re certainly not alone. I am too. When I was a senior in high school the movie “American Pie” came out on video around the same time and I remember watching it at a friend’s house after graduation practice. I had never seen a movie like that before (my parents were pretty strict as far as tv and movies went, now I know why) and I was embarassed just to be watching it. I didn’t know they made movies like that, until then…it was just too much. My friends thought it was so funny and I was sitting there with my face red. So, at least know you’re not alone. 🙂
