The church was breathtakingly beautiful this morning. I will say that I am used to BLUE for Advent but since purple is my favorite color–I’m loving it!! The Advent wreath is so pretty!! I want one!
I did participate in the new responses but I was sure confused! Between all the page flipping and my belting out “AND ALSO WITH YOU” I left feeling like mass was a mess! I love my Sunday missal, it has the Eucharistic prayers and I will say that they are breathtakingly beautiful although they seem very clumsy to read out loud.
I did participate in every inch of the mass but still do NOT like the "I’m not worthy …under my roof…stuff that just takes away the comfort I used to glean when I was wrestling up to the last minute with whether or not to take communion. I could care less about someone’s house, it’s ME feeling unworthy…it just doesn’t get it for me and is distracting. All in all, most people seemed to get it all right.
I was sad not hearing, “free us from all anxiety”…that meant the world to me as I suffer with a crippling anxiety disorder. The word distress sounds so impersonal…but it didn’t bother me as much as I thought it would. I simply added, “free me from all anxiety Lord” after Fr Dan finished and felt OK with that.
After mass I heard someone say, “I thought Catholics didn’t believe in consubstantiation.” I was stunned that this man even could SAY that word much less know it’s historical place in the Lutheran religion. I could see he was upset. I said, “That word was referring to the relationship of Jesus to the Father not the Eucharist.” and he said, “Oh OK”. That was my biggest objection in the changes to the Nicene Creed.
But…I listened and everyone said the word consubstantiation correctly so that was good. I did see a few rosaries come out (an old couple), and a few people shove the missellette books back in the rack and stop responding (3 or 4 people), almost no one was singing but it’s hard…it’s the only mass I’ve known and maybe that’s true for others. About 1/2 said, “And also with you” including me once. It just FITS even though I know the Latin. I can live with it but I see myself still saying it wrong a year from now when I don’t stop and think. Every time I said, “And with your spirit” I kept picturing Casper the friendly ghost standing next to Fr Dan…like a pet ghost??? I don’t know, I’m weird what can I say?
UGH…I really put effort into it but I really don’t like it…I guess this is just going to take a LOT longer for some of us than others. Overall the church tried hard but you could see some were upset, others were confused, and most were flipping around trying to figure out what was going on, almost no one sang, I think they were too busy looking at the pages and responses.
Blessings to all on this first Sunday in Advent–in spite of all the changes our parish did surprisingly well and the priest was warm and affirming.
