So how do we find out if cornbeef is okay in our diocese next week?

Any ideas about who to call or how to find out without bothering too many people? We have a new bishop this year but in years past I know the obligation to abstain was usually dispensed for St. Patty’s, and I’d like to know how to find out for this year…

I would call the bishop’s office. Since it’s the bishop who makes the call, his staff ought to know.

I would not even call and would abstain from meat. The only Fridays that I know of that are not bound by this under canon law (specifically Can 1251) are solemnities and March 17th is only an Optional Memorial. The last time this happened was 2 years ago when the Solemnity of St Joseph (March 19) fell on a Friday.

I appreciate the concern but if my bishop dispenses our diocese from abstaining then I will be partaking. I’m just curious how to find out, but I’ll probably just call the office! Thanks for the suggestion.
 
You can also phone your diocesan newapaper, as St. Patrick is the co-patron of our diocese we are usually dispensed in our diocese and the newspaper always mentions it well in advance.
 
to answer question in your title, do a forum search for “angry forum members protesting action of their own bishops in granting a dispensation” you should get quite a response.
 
Check your diocesian website. Sometime they will list if a dispensation has been given.

In the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, the archbishop has permitted the eating of meat on St. Patrick’s day provided that you abstain on another day in lieu of it.

Archbishop Dolan of Milwaukee has made the same decision. Seems quite reasonable to me . . .

Bishop Robert Brom from the Diocese of San Diego has made the dispensation, also. Got it from our Irish-heritage pastor this past Sunday when he announced it after Mass. 👍

Cornbeef and cabbage, here I come!
