So, I realize that I actually don't understand the Mass very well

so does anyone know of any resources (online, books, apps, podcasts, etc.) that could help me?

The symbolism, rituals, sources and meanings of the propers, advice on how to best pray it, theological underpinnings, the connection with the book of Revelation, that kind of stuff.

I recommend my own books (in my signature), because I wrote them for just that purpose: to explain the symbolism, rituals, connection to Scripture, theological meaning, etc. My books only cover the Order of the Mass (the parts that do not change from day to day) as opposed to the Propers (which do change day to day).

An analysis of the Propers would make an excellent book. If you can stand his tone, Fr. John Zuhlsdorf’s blog, “What Does the Prayer Really Say?”, often provides information about the origins of the Propers (i.e. what ancient sacramentaries the prayers come from) as well as an in-depth look at the meaning of the Latin text.

Mother Angelica is having someone on all this week explaining the Mass, not just the new mass but everything about the history of the mass and what everything about the mass means.

Its on Ewtn and I watched the first episode last night.

IMHO, a lot of folks are in the same boat.

The best book I have read so far is Mass Appeal by David DesOrmeaux. FWIW, I wrote a review of it here.

Nice stuff there on your site. And I know what you mean about his tone, I read him every day. Sometimes I’m just like… ehhhhhh… but his stuff can be quite helpful. I try not to get caught up in the whole Trad vs Modern thing, although I definitely lean more traditional. It’s just that the whole debate nearly threw me off course after I converted.

I would watch it if it was online, but as it stands I don’t even have antenna TV. I stopped watching a lot of it a while ago, and now I just use Netflix, Hulu, and so on. But thanks anyways!
