According to a friend of mine The Bible says something along the lines of “you must not waste your seed”. She told me that, therefore, girls are allowed to masturbate (according to the church)whereas boys are not, because girls have no seed to waste. I would have been skeptical except that this is a very devoted Cathlic friend, who makes a point to spread offical teachings of the church. When I questioned her on this she told me she’d asked a priest and he had told her that this was true. So, long story short, as a woman am I allowed to masturbate or not? :ehh:

Nobody should masturbate. Masturbation is a grave matter and this is what the Catechism of the Catholic Church has to say about it:
**2352 **By *masturbation *is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action."137 “The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose.” For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of “the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved.”

For those reasons, masturbation is always wrong and is considered gravely disordered. You were wise to look into it. You should also charitably correct your friend who is incorrect on this one.

God Bless,
Matt

As for some historical background, it was once believed that males had all the “material” necessary for a baby and women were just the incubators. That probably explains the extreme taboo against those who “waste their seed” - it would have been tantamount to abortion in our century. It could also explain why homosexuality and masturbation among females is not mentioned in the Hebrew bible, but is condemned a number of times for males.

Do you have any further infomration on this please, or a source?

Thanks,

God sets us up to waste seed constantly: Women release several oocytes for each cycle, and typically none, occasionally one, rarely more than one, is used. Men leak seed all the time, and what they retain is broken down and washes out. Much human seed is defective, and our bodies are designed to release most of the damaged seed when we are unlikely to bear healthy young anyway, such as when we are very young or getting old etc.
I don’t know about ancient people’s idea of ova, but the majority must have known because, 1) most female non-mammals lay eggs, and, 2) babies look like their mothers. In Genesis, God spoke of Eve’s seed. To look at these facts and come away seeing women as just incubators (which some Hellenic Greeks did) seems a little strange. In any case, even if they didn’t know a period represents lost seed, men obviously lose theirs in their sleep and even while awake all the time. So I think she doesn’t know what she’s talking about.

In Genesis this is brought. Well, about the male “wasting” his seed. It’s in chapter 38. I don’t know if that helps much, but thought I’d add it to the discussion.

,correct, and she in turn needs to bring this to the attention of the Priest who gave her that bad infornation (if indeed one did, I think sometimes people just say that they asked a Priest this or that when they probably didn’t.)

In early times it was thought that the male carried a complete undeveloped human in his body. This "humuncle’ ( my spelling may be off} was placed in the woman’s body and developed there. To “spill ones seed” would have been considered tantamount to killing a miniature human being. I believe this was discussed in Noonan’s book on contraception which may very well be out of print. 👍

“Hebrew Bible” … the NT does discuss lesbianism.

Romans 1:
  1. For this cause God gave them up unto vile passions: for their women changed the natural use into that which is against nature:27. and likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another, men with men working unseemliness, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was due.

A woman can masturbate herself if she is left without sexual satisfaction after the man climaxes and is unwilling to stimulate her. That’s the only place where it’s possible without sin. A woman is entitled to satisfaction from the marital embrace.

I’ve always wondered about the above post…the CCC, in discussing MB, does NOT make any loopholes about using it in the marriage act…when/how did this theology evolve? By reading the CCC, it would seem that the act is disordered in any fashion. Consensus here is that any amount of MB is sinful, whether it leads to climax or not. So why, according to the ‘rules’ is this allowed? Even in marriage? Could the theology evolved somewhat? Seems like they need to update and put a 'Exceptions to the above can be made when used in foreplay leading to the marital act, or when a wife needs to finish, blah blah blah.

When CAFites stress the immoralness of this act, and it’s mortal consequenses unless very LIMITED reasons are met, they quote this passage, cause it’s ‘the law.’ But it’s never mentioned when in the course of the marital act.

Could things have changed? Could the priests I have talked to been right in comparing it to alcohol or tobacco; that a little isn’t the best thing for you, but it’s not a sin when done ‘in moderation?’

Maybe ‘the rule’ isn’t so black and white after all?

See JP2’s Love and Responsibility (available in excerpts online) and Christopher West’s Good News About Sex and Marriage. Both these books address this issue. If you don’t believe West, how could you not believe the saintly JP2?
