So is this a sin? Its about words

Is **** a cussword. my school teacher didnt like it haha

and in one of my games a person says “ohh God” is that a sin to play that game now? He is supposed to sound like “ohh noo” I cant tell if he is in prayerful manner or not. He doesnt say it quickly or very loudly. He crouches down and tukes his head in and says “ohhhhh Goooooddddd.” In the game he is a hostage and wasnt rescued.

According to our priest, “Oh God” can be a prayer, of course it must be done with reverence. Without knowing the game however, I couldn’t tell you one way or another.

IMO, if you know what the church teaches regarding sin it may just take a bit of thinking about it on your own to determine whether or not it is sinful. i.e. When you go to the movies, you know that there may be curse words or irreverence in them? Do you go or not go? And if you go, is it a sin?

My advice is to ask your priest or spritual director. That way you may be able to explain in more detail what the situation is. They will be able to tell you if it is an occasion to sin or not.

Hmmmmmmmm cuss words. I used to swear – cuss – creatively, I enjoyed it even. Since recent conversion that has gone away, MOSTLY. I believe the “oh ****” words lead to other words (IMO). God just took away my desire to put my creative cuss word spin on everything. It just seems easier to not say anything that would offend. In a world where people are upping the ante all the time on what is acceptable, I just decided to verbally go back to a time where bad words were unacceptable. I find now that I’m not swearing and cussing, that life is more peaceful – it has affected my attitude, and as a result I feel more at peace with the world. (There is less drama if there is less swearing…again IMO).

I pray that God will help you answer the question you have asked for yourself. The world will go on and say whatever it wants, but it is truly a way we can follow Christ’s example.

You know the scripture “seek what is higher, purer, etc.” and also the one where (is it Paul) who said let our speech be “yay or nay” sort of like “keep it basic”?

It’s a vulgar word, but it does not take God’s name in vain. The standard advice given about this word and its synonyms is that the words are rude and crude, but it is not sinful to say them unless it is purposely to disrespect, disobey or scandalize someone. It’s always better to elevate one’s language, however.

Somehow it seems here in Scotland, and even more in Ireland, that blasphemy isn’t as bad if you mention the entire Holy Family, as in:

“Oh Jesus-Mary-and-Joseph!”

It’s hard to take such expressions seriously, even priests do it! but it does raise issue with what counts as blasphemy and what doesn’t.
