I play games on the interent. and they contain NO cussing in the games. but people cuss. Is it a sin to play with those people?

I would say it is not a sin. It would be a sin if you played so much that it took time away from God…like an addiction. But if you just play to have a bit of fun, no harm. You aren’t accountable for others’ action of cussing. My opinion.

Even the cussing itself may not be sinful. Vulgar, lowbrow, etc, but not necessarily sinful.

IMHO:

The euphemisms that cover bodily functions are vulgar, but not sinful.

The euphemisms that cover the sexual act – definitely vulgar. Sinful? More problematic. As descriptors of sex, I’s say yes-ish; sex being a sacred thing, profaning it thus could be a sin. As a mere expletive ("**** this! I’m so ****ing hungry… I’ll be ****ed if I do! Oh, no, we’re ****ed! Fan-****ing-tastic!) it has slipped to the level of mere vulgarity.

Using the name of Jesus Christ as an expletive – especially in conjunction with any of the aforementioned words – is blasphemy. Definitely major sin.

“Damn” is iffy. It’s become rather a mild oath. Adding “God-” to it goes over the line in my book. Actually cursing someone – damning them to hell – is either blasphemy or, at best, a sin against charity (as would also be any vulgar insult against a person).

Now, even tho’ you said you yourself don’t cuss – and I commend you for more self-control that I have sometimes shown – you must also be careful to avoid the occasion of sin, i.e. exposing yourself to it to the point that you become somewhat numb to it, and slip into it yourself.

The other problem arises is that once started, foul language can become a habit. Although it may have started as a few choice words or phrases carefully selected, eventually, as one becomes inured to it, it becomes commonplace and actually very hard to shake. It becomes like a verbal tic. In the speaker’s subconscious mind, it’s no different than those people you hear that always say, “uh”, “um”, “like”, etc, and is as impossible to shake as a verbal tic.

And even if you work to control it very hard – you can still slip up, at the worst possible time. Back when I was in the army, I was exposed to cussing on a daily basis. I often used vulgarities around my peers because, well, for no better reason than that everyone did. I was always careful to moderate my language around civilians, especially my family. Well, I was visiting my folks after a long field exercise, I was tired and grumpy, as well as feeling I was being done wrong by my superiors…long story short, in mid-gripe I complained about “some ****ing officer” and then nearly bit my tongue in half. I spent the next half-hour apologizing to mom.

Anyway, enough preaching.

But if you’re worried that Gosh will dang you to heck, then go see your priest and confess. 😃

Hope this helps in some way.

Personally, I think you’d be better off with friends with better vocabularies.

Hope this helps in some way.
I truly does not. I dont understand were you stand on this. I am curious as to what you think is best. I dont think it will slip into my common language because i dont really talk with those people that cuss. but I quess hearing can lead to you useing it. I will be very careful not to cuss dont any you guys worry 👍

but is it okay though to play on those games were people cuss. but not the game itself

I hope I didnt sound like a butt head by the way. lol :o
Not at all. If you weren’t sure what I was getting at, then the fault is most likely mine.

In short…a lot of cussing, especially taking the name of Jesus in vain, is sinful. While you may not do it yourself, constant exposure to it can make you numb to its effects, such that you may inadvertently slip into it. If it ever becomes a habit, that can be really, really hard to shake.

Better? 😃

Maybe that’s what I should’ve said in the first place. 😊

And if the games themselves are not violent, or pornographic, or what have you, then I don’t see any sin in them.

Which I think was your original question.

Which I missed again.

SO I’M GETTING OLD!! LEAVE ME ALONE!!! AND GET OFF THE LAWN!!!

😃 👍

I would say that playing the game itself is not a sin. I have played a couple different internet games where this has happened concerning the cussing. To be honest, their poor language made me very uncomfortable while playing the game. In our culture that is becoming technologically individualist we run more and more into people interacting through the internet rather than interacting in the real world. Even though you are on the internet and not physically near these people, you are still exposing yourself to vulgar language, and depending on the degree of their cussing, you could be exposing your thoughts to some real filth.

So MG, my advice to you is to find a different game where the people are not swearing or using vulgar terms. I advise you this way because I do not think that it is right for anyone to expose themselves to trash - even if they are not the source of it. We are children of God - children who have a real relationship with Him. Children whose hearts should be pure (Matthew 5:8). How much more difficult it is to have that pure heart - especially in prayer - if we have subjected our minds to various vulgar and impure things. We should never be willing to sacrifice our pure hearts and minds for something like games - rather - we should be willing to sacrifice the games in order to keep our hearts and minds pure, because no game is worth jeopardizing our own purity - even if it is just vulgar words.

Leave that game behind 👍

poor language makes me uncomfortable too. But Gizmo do you think it would be okay to play those games if I just censored my mind?
You seem to be the only one saying it is a sin. and the gate is narrow. and what is popular is not right. and im just trying to understand. Couldnt I just censor myself though ( in my thoughts )
I dont have much experience because I always thought it a sin to play games were people cussed and I come on here and people say its ok. Is all we have is opinions on this? Is there any teaching that could just set this straight in the church?

Maybe you could look at it in this way. Take movies for example, let’s say that you are watching a movie and all of a sudden you find that it is kind of raunchy (language, vulgar talk or worse). You have two options right? One would be to shut the movie off and watch something else. The other would be to keep on watching it regardless of the filth that is being put into your head. MG it seems like you and your game present the same options. In the case of the movie - would you keep watching because you wanted to know how the story ended or would you shut it off? Ask yourself: would you keep watching a movie after finding out that is had pretty bad language, vulgar terms and so on just because you wanted to know the story line? And if not, why would you play a game on the computer where many people are expressing themselves in vulgar ways - just so that you can play a game?

If a movie ends up being bad - I know that I should shut it off. My wanting to be entertained does not give me excuses to be entertained by things that are not that good.

The censoring of the mind idea seems like a good intention but do you seriously think that would work?

The game playing itself is not sin - I do think that it is not a healthy thing for anyone to continually see or hear vulgar things because eventually those things will affect you.

For instance - if I made a vulgar remark in my post (don’t worry - I won’t), you would have read it and, some sort of image would have been sent to your imagination (to your mind) that corresponded with that remark. This in turn would affect you - whether you are censoring your mind or not - that vulgar remark, after you having read it, is now sitting in your head. Does that make sense? Because that is why you should not even try to censor your mind - that junk will still seen - and it will still make it to your imagination.

It really does come down to keeping yourself pure; body, mind and spirit - even if that means keeping ourselves distanced from certain things.

No, at least I don’t believe so. You cannot control the behavior of others, so just make sure to watch your own.

MG, not to push Scripture at you but there has always been one specific thing that the Lord said that I have always tried to hold myself to in regards to how I am supposed to love Him. I have told people that this is the ‘everything’ passage because when Christ was asked what the greatest commandment was he answered that it was to love God with - everything we are and with everything that we have. ALL (all is used in all three occurrences of this); ALL our heart, soul, mind, and strength.

In the case of the game you also have to realize something else. That following Christ is not just about avoiding sin but also in doing good things as well. This includes this greatest command as top priority. So maybe ask yourself this as well: if playing the game is not sin - which I don’t it is - is it something that will keep you from loving God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.

The game, like I’ve said before, is not necessarily a sin, but you exposing yourself to vulgar terms (especially if it is often in the game) is certainly not good for you.
*
Matthew 22:37 And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.

Mark 12:30 and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’

Luke 10:27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”*

St. Paul also said something in regards to the mind.

Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Look at it this way. You cannot control what they are doing. Only what you do. If you do not cuss, then there can be no sin.

Jesus himself associated with those who sinned. You can bet that they cussed.

Yeah Jesus did do that - but associating with sinners is a bit of a differing situation than playing a computer game. Listening to other peoples’ vulgarities is not healthy for us spiritually. These remarks are always dirty, derogatory, crude, or what have you. The game, as I have said a couple of times now, is not a sin, however, if I had to decide what would be more spiritually beneficial it would be to avoid games like that where people are always trash talking.

I have used the Jesus example before. It is fine to associate yourself with sinners out of love for them, whether they are your friends or family. I know the line “hate the sin, love the sinner”. But in regards to the video game, the being amidst people who cuss is not the same as associating with them out of love (what Jesus did) - rather - there is association only because they all happen to playing the same game. Christ associated with sinners because he was thirsty for their souls and wanting to offer them salvation - MG is playing a video game where the most association done is done anonymously by means of the internet and for the purpose of entertainment - not out of a desire to save their souls.

My advice has based on the fact that this entertainment and it does not sound like a good form of it if there is that much cursing going on while the game is being played. In today’s world there are an endless amount of things we can choose for entertainment (so we know that there is more out there for MG than just this game) - playing a game like this with people like that does not seem like a good choice.

looks like Gizmo has got it right to me.

I am bored with this post. I am just going to ask a priest. I am not sure which side to believe. I am pretty sure Gizmo though.

Guys,

If we had to avoid every situation where foul language was used, we’d never be able to turn on the TV, go to another Football game, or even go to work for that matter. We need to watch how we behave and maybe by giving a good example, we might be able to change others.

Not quite what Mini G was addressing, but we really can’t control what comes out of the mouth of others…

Well I cannot dispute your points and opinions other than to simply say that, this person can be a force for good by being spiritually strong when around these other people. However, the absence of this good example will only increase the power of the negative.

All I’m saying is that if can avoid something we should. I don’t know if you have ever played some of these online games but sometimes the people who chat on them can be excessively vulgar: like 100% more than a football game or TV. I think the game is worth the sacrifice if it means not being exposed to lots of bad language. Also, on some of these game chats, it is not just cuss words but the vulgar remarks can often be of a crude sexual nature - and that’s certainly a good enough reason not to play that game anymore.
