So it's May already. Did your parish have a May crowning?

Giving flowers to a living person here on earth is not idolatrous.
Giving flowers to a statue and crowning it could be interpreted as such.

Are flowers left at the cemetery where one’s mother is buried potentially idolatrous in your view?

Is an American Flag drapped over a picture of a fallen solider also interpreted as idolatrous?

Or flowers placed in front of the photo by their family?

After all, if the solider died in a State of Grace, they too are living. Is the honor given to them via their photo against the will of God?
 
I’m sure many people plant a flower on their mother’s grave for Mother’s day. Is that idolatrous?

It sounds like a flawed reasoning to me…I adore the BVM, and frequently ask for her protection. Why can’t a thank you be shown?👍

It is very important our children learn to love her and treat her with the respect and honor she deserves;)
 
We are a tiny and poor mission parish, so we don’t have a statue to crown. The TLM usually does it on Mother’s day, so I am going to go to that.
 
Yes we had one on Friday last week and because it was during the children’s mass. So the first communion children were all dressed up and the 8th graders and the grandparents were specially invited so the children could all sit with family instead of sitting together. All the children were invited to bring one flower of their choice, many brought one from a garden, and they processed to the altar to the statue of Mary, it is about 3ft. tall. There were vases on the altar ready for them. A little girl, about 4, did the crowning. They sang a Mary song that we all had special cards for and then Father proceeded with their mass which they all participate in, the reading psalm etc. Each day the fallen flowers like tulips that lost it petals were removed and there is still a vase of leftover flowers.
I had never seen one so it was very nice.

You are not supposed to ADORE the BVM. You may venerate her but adoration is reserved for God.
 
I did say I adore her., but I don’t mean as I adore God.I said I love her and respect her…I don’t worship her…there is a big difference
 
We had our crowning last Friday, the children from the local primary school did it. We have a beautiful statue of Our Lady of Walsingham (Walsingham is the national Marian shrine of England), and the children gave her a very pretty crown that has real flowers in it that can be replaced as the old ones wilt. The statue is to one side of the Sanctuary and will be there for the whole month of May. We are very fortunate to have priests with a great love of Our Lady and they always promote all the Marian feasts.

The girls who recently recieved Confirmation and the girls who are about to receive First Holy Communion next week processesd around the Church wearing light blue satin cloaks.

The Confirmation and FHC boys formed a KoC 4th Degree style “honor guard” for the girls as they processed up the center asile.

Three of the Confirmandi girls did the actually crowing while the kids sang Marian hymns.

Brendan than you saw my daughter. She was one of the “vase girls”, (holding a vase for the other children to deposit flowers in as the processed in). The shortest young lady of the 4 “vase girls”- white dress with pink roses at the bottom.😉

I went to the EF Mass on Saturday. Our 3 year old wasn’t feeling well, so we though it best to ‘tag team’ Masses so one of us could be home with her. And my son went with me so he could see how the ‘black cassocks’ serve at a Tridentine Mass. That’s one thing he wants to do as soon as he gets sufficent Latin under his belt.

My wife and daughters were there on Sunday though. One of the FHC girls was my oldest daughter. 🙂

I’ll check the pics that my wife took and look for your daughter.
 
We had ours on Monday, but I couldn’t go, as it was too early in the evening, and I was still at work. :o
 
Our parish had the May crowning as part of the FHC Mass–the FHC kids in their suits and white dresses processed up to the statue with flowers at the beginning of Mass. Our parish is also praying the rosary before each Sunday Mass as a way to honor Mary this month.
 
We had a May crowning at the end of all the Masses last Sunday. It was simple, we sang a Marian hymn while a little girl processed up the aisle and crowned Mary. She is surrounded by a ton of vases of flowers, my guess is from our parish school.

Also, it was our last week of CCD for the summer and all the kids brought in flowers and we had a procession, laid the flowers in front of Mary and prayed the Rosary together.

And, yes, every parish in which I have ever lived (St. Louis, Chicago, Atlanta, Cleveland and now Alexandria, VA) has had May crownings. Some were “bigger deals” than others, but they all had them.

What I DON’T see any more is home May crownings. When I was a girl (and the dinosaurs roamed the earth 😉 ) one of the things that so drew me to Catholicism was my best friend’s home and family. They always had a little altar for Mary in the girls’ room and, on May 1, had a family May crowning with an aluminum foil crown. I, of course, was left out of this devotion (being Protestant and all) but always longed to participate. So, when my own girls were little, I got the chance! 👍

Well, don’t come over next week, when we make the crown for the statue out in the back yard. 😉 😃 We will be using flowers, however, and not foil.
