MEMORIAL MASS FOR ST. MAXIMILIAN MARY KOLBE, PRIEST AND MARTYR
Entrance Antiphon:
Come, you whom my Father blessed, says the Lord: I tell you, whatever you did
for one of the least of my brothers or sisters, you did for Me.
Opening Prayer:
Gracious God,
You filled your priest and martyr,
St. Maximilian Kolbe,
with zeal for souls
and love for his neighbor.
Through the prayer of this devoted servant of Mary Immaculate,
grant that in our efforts to serve others for your glory
we too may become like Christ your Son,
who loved His own in the world even to the end,
and no lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
First Reading:
Wisdom 3:1-9, but our priest chose this alternate: 1John 3:14-18
We have passed out of death and into life, and of this we can be sure
because we love our brothers. If you refuse to love, you must remain dead;
to hate your brother is to be a murderer, and murderers as you know, do
not have eternal life in them. This has taught us love - that He gave up His
life for us; and we, too, ought to give up our lives for our brothers. If a man
who was rich enough in this world’s goods saw that one of his brothers was
in need, but closed his heart to him, how could the love of God be living in
him? My children, our love is not to be just words or mere talk, but something
real and active.
Psalm:
Precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of His faithful ones.
I trusted, even when I said:
‘I am sorely afflicted’,
and when I said in my alarm:
‘No man can be trusted.’
O precious in the eyes of the Lord
is the death of His faithful.
Your servant, Lord, your servant am I;
you have loosened my bonds.
A thanksgiving sacrifice I make:
I will call on the Lord’s name.
My vows to the Lord I will fulfil before all His people.
Gospel Acclamation:
Alleluia. The man who loves his life loses it,
while the man who hates his life in this world
preserves it to life eternal.
Gospel reading: (John 15:12-16)
Jesus said to His disciples: 'This is my commandment: love one another,
as I have loved you. A man can have no greater love than to lay down his
life for his friends. You are my friends, if you do what I command you. I
shall not call you servants any more, because a servant does not know his
master’s business, I call you friends, because I have made known to you
everything I have learnt from my Father. You did not choose me, no, I chose you -
and I commissioned you to go out and to bear fruit, fruit that will last; and
then the Father will give you anything you ask Him in My name. What I
command you is to love one another.
Homily:
St. Maximilian Kolbe saw a vision of Mary at a young age. She offered him
the choice of 2 flowers, a white one symbolizing purity, and a red one
symbolizing martyrdom. He chose the red one, and started his own “militia”
for Mary. He was arrested by the Nazi’s and he offered his life in exchange of
another man who was to be executed. The method of execution was
starvation. He was in a group of ten to be executed, and he was the last to
die. Since he didn’t die, the Nazi’s injected him with lethal poison.
I hope everyone enjoyed the readings and homily from my daily mass today…
I wonder how long St. Maximillian Kolbe would have lived if the Nazi’s didn’t
lethally inject him?
