“dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs of the same
promise”
I never thought of Abraham dwelling in tents with his grandson,
Jacob, who is later named “Israel” by God. I would like to know
if little Jacob and Esau visited grandpa Abraham often. What did
Abraham say to his 2 little twin grandsons? Were they cute?
I’d really like to know if grandma and grandpa Abraham and Sarah
favored Jacob or Esau the way their parents Isaac and Rebecca
did.
Then the first reading goes on to praise the faith of Abraham and
Sarah. They just don’t mention the unfaithful part about involving
Hagar into the plan. Then they don’t even mention the existence
of Ishmael, her son. When God told Abraham he would have a
son with Sarah, whom he would place His blessing on, Abraham
said, “No Lord, bless Ishmael!”. Isaac was not his only son,
as the reading states. I wonder if the Koran includes this
conversation of Abraham with God? The Ishmaelites also have
12 tribes, and believe they are God’s chosen ones. What would
happen if Abraham had been truly faithful and Isaac was truly
his only son? Then, what if Jacob had been truly faithful and
married only Rachel? The next day, as soon as he found out
he had been tricked, he could have sent her back to her father.
Maybe God never would have even sent them into slavery into
Egypt. My point is this, God has plans for us, and they are for
our good. Why do we insist on doing everything the hard way?
But yes, Abraham had faith, and it was the faith Jesus later
mentioned when He said that “God can raise up descendants
of Abraham from these stones!”
Today God has given us the power promised to Abraham at
the end of the psalm. He has given us to power to worship Him without fear of enemies, and to be holy and righteous in His sight all the days of our life. It’s not like that for people in certain other countries, like China, and places in Asia and Africa. They must worship the one true God and His Son Jesus Christ in fear of their life, as the martyrs. Why was this chance given to us and not
them?
In today’s gospel, Jesus was asleep, and then wakes up to calm
a storm. (how many of you parents have had to do that?).
An interesting thing mentioned briefly is that there were other
boats with them. How many other boats? How close together
were they? If Jesus’ disciples told Him they were going to
drown, then how were the other boats doing? Were any of them
lost in the storm?
Today is the day of St. John Bosco, who founded the Salesian
Society. He worked on the welfare of boys and girls through
love and persuasion, rather than formal religious education.
His first reading from Philippians says to fill your minds with
everything that is true, noble, good, pure, things we love and honor, virtuous, and worthy of praise. That is our job in this life
when it comes to children everywhere. It is for others that the
devil has appointed to fill their minds with things that are cruel, violent, and immoral.
