The first reading tells us more about the story of creation.
There was just dirt, being watered by a spring coming up
from the earth and watering it all, no plants or shrubs yet.
Then God planted a garden and put man there. Then everything
grew! Can you imagine just suddenly being all grown up,
no childhood or parents, just being by yourself in this land
of wet dirt, and then everything starts growing? Then God
“settled” him in the garden, to cultivate and care for it. So
how do you go about settling a man in Adam’s position? (just sleep on the ground anywhere you like?) What are the instructions for caring for the garden? God planted it and
watered it Himself. What is there for Adam to do but eat from it?
That’s not cultivating or caring.
The end of the psalm reminds me of this prayer:
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful,
and kindle in them the fire of Your love.
Send forth your Spirit, and they shall be created
and You shall renew the face of the earth.
O God, Who instructs the hearts of the faithful
grant that by that same Holy Spirit, that we may
truly wise, and ever rejoice in His consolations
Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
There is a list of evil things that come out of a man
in today’s gospel. You can see by the list that it is
very easy to be evil, you can even do it by accident.
From the beginning of the list (evil thoughts) to the
end (folly). You can even murder, steal, and commit
adultry, by hating your brother, robbing God of tithes
and offerings, and looking lustfully at a person. I can
look at the list and try to deny it all I want, but the last
word still gets me: folly.
This is the day of our Lady of Lourdes. (St. Bernadette’s vision)
