“All wisdom comes from the Lord”
Yes, but some people think it comes from themselves. They
never thank God for their good ideas, and they look down on
others who didn’t think of it. That is very annoying.
Why? Because the “fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom”.
So why should someone look down on me if they don’t know this? Of course, why should I care if someone looks down on
me if they are not God?
“holiness befits your house” is in today’s psalm. And what is
holiness? When we walk into church, what are the things that
are truly holy? Churches are purposely being made more
simple today, instead of fancy, perhaps because of a changing opinion that simplicity is holier than fancy. And are not our homes “houses of the Lord”? What should be in our homes that is holy besides Christian love?
“This kind can only come out through prayer”
This is one of the most exciting gospels. The disciples have
finally met their match. This is the most powerful evil spirit
they’ve ever seen. I wonder how many times they tried to
cast it out? How many different things did they say and do?
How long did they keep trying? And then Jesus says that the
most powerful spirit they can encounter, seemingly invincible,
can come out through prayer. (another version says, “through
fasting and prayer”) Did the disciples really not try that?
Jesus already showed that it doesn’t take a long prayer.
So now we come to lent. We are going to be in fasting and
prayer. We do not know what we will encounter in this place
called “lent”, but Jesus says we will have power over it all, in
His name. Amen.
Today is the day of the famous St. Polycarp, famous for his
words when urged to renounce Christ and save his life: For
86 years I have served Him and He has never wronged me.
How can I renounce the King who has saved me?
St. Polycarp, you’re my hero!

There are fine lines between wisdom and knowledge, Universities teach knowledge; religion teaches wisdom. And, yes, I also believe a fear of the Lord is prerequisite of wisdom.
It’s profound that wisdom is treated in feminine term, with the Holy Mary being the Seat of Wisdom." Wisdom is the beginning and end of religious mysticism, whether it be understood from Catholics such as Saint John of the Cross or from the mysticism of our Jewish brother and sisters.
I think of wisdom as being as vast as the ocean, with our being only able to analyze it a few drops at a time. If I had just 3 drops of wisdom, let it be faith, hope and love!

This immediately follows the transfiguration in Marks’s gospel, so the “they” in v 14 is Jesus, James, John, and Peter.
This reading gives us a lot of information if we pay close attention:
• If you have any doubts on whether evil spirits exist, and whether they have the ability to inhabit people, doubt no more. One of Satan’s greatest lies is his increasing ability to convince people that neither he nor any other demon exist. They do. It’s a war out there. See Ephesians 6:10-17 for more info.
• There are different kinds of evil spirits.
• We are given tools to deal with them. Christ identifies faith (v23) and prayer (v29) as two such tools. Others are listed in the bible and have been described over time by saints. Among these are fasting, fasting, prayer, and almsgiving – three things we are called to do during Lent.
• The boy’s father sees that he doesn’t have enough faith to deal with the spirit. He goes directly to Christ to give him more: “Help my unbelief!” It’s a grace to realize that you don’t have enough faith, and to ask Christ to increase it for you.

of fasting? Or was it on purpose?
