The first reading has much in common with Psalm 43 (New International Version)

Psalm 43

1[a] Vindicate me, O God,
and plead my cause against an ungodly nation;
rescue me from deceitful and wicked men.

2 You are God my stronghold.
Why have you rejected me?
Why must I go about mourning,
oppressed by the enemy?

3 Send forth your light and your truth,
let them guide me;
let them bring me to your holy mountain,
to the place where you dwell.

4 Then will I go to the altar of God,
to God, my joy and my delight.
I will praise you with the harp,
O God, my God.

5 Why are you downcast, O my soul?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.
 
I agree with you, the first reading and the psalm are all about lent.
But how is it that you came up with psalm 43 as the psalm?
The USCCB says psalm 37.

It is interesting to me that part of the psalm says,
“They are not put to shame in an evil time”, yet part of the
first reading says that worthy people are tested in the
crucible of humiliation.

I was really quoting Psalm 43, and not psalm 37 which was a part of todays Mass.
 
All today’s readings are true instructions for lent.

The responsorial truly strikes me, “Commit your life to the Lord
and He will help you”

I have found that to be true. I’m just not interesting in having
Him help me any more. I want to help Him. I mean to be very
quiet this lent, and listen with both ears to what He is telling me.
I want to see what He has already put right in front of my face.

I liked your comment that today’s readings are instructions for Lent. I went back and re-read them with that in mind and I thought they really came together.
 
Christ withdraws from the crowds to privately teach his disciples. He gives them a direct description of what will happen to him, but they don’t understand. They really won’t understand until Pentecost.

We also see the humanity of the disciples. They were men, with human desires. One such desire is the desire to be approved, to be loved, to be thought of as “the best.” I personally have to fight this desire on a near daily basis. At least I’m in good company with Peter, James, John, and the rest.

Christ’s teaching applies to us as well as them. We are called to be humble servants. Not servants who need recognition, or who need to be applauded, or who need to be seen. We are called to be the servant of all. This message has been ringing in my ears lately. I spend too much time caring about how I look, and what others think of me. The only person who’s opinion truly matters is God.

I’ve found the Litany of Humility to be a great prayer to address personal pride. It’s nice to have on hand as we move into Lent.

This is GREAT! I just read the Litany of Humility and I think it’s Catholicism at its greatest. It’s almost like becoming “stoic” to pride and self-esteem. This is one prayer that needs to get internalized.
 
I had a priest give that to me as penance a few months ago. The first time I read it, I had to really stop and think about whether I wanted to pray it. It involves putting self to death in a way that very few are willing to do.

I’ve found that I really have to swallow my pride to say it at all, and even more so to keep it in mind and try and put it into practice as daily events unfold.
 
I enjoyed the litany of humility, thank you, it is something to
think about. I think I’ll add it to my prayers this lent.
