So let's talk about today's readings 5/10/09

“The church throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria was at peace”
So, the Jews and the Samaritans who were Christains were at peace, after
all their years of animosity… I wonder what the Pope’s plans are for making
peace with all the denominations of Christianity? When he took office, he said
he was our fellow worker in the vineyard, but it would be nice to get some
directions from him as leader.

“all the families of the nations shall bow down before him” – from today’s psalm.
Won’t this be a glorious day?

“And His commandment is this:
we should believe in the Name of His Son, Jesus Christ,
and love one another just as He commanded us”
Today’s 2nd reading is the answer to the thread about how to know we are
“in Christ”. That thread is over 700 posts long, and yet the answer is today’s
2nd reading.

The gospel says if we remain in Him we will bear much fruit. But what kind of
fruit? why, the fruit of the Spirit of course… Love, Joy, Peace, Patient Endurance,
Kindness, Generosity, Faith, Mildness, and Chastity. These are the things we
cannot do in our own power, but only through the power of God…

Children, let us love not in word or speech
but in deed and truth.

This one struck a chord with me, for I’ve been tossed around a great deal this year, believing what people promise me, only to find their words did not match their actions and I’ve been paying a high price for it. This also defines where your faith is at, for it’s easy to say anything, quite a different matter to act upon it.

I like today’s gospel with its images of fruits and vines. After carefully looking it over, I noticed that there are different kinds of fruit mentioned and each one has a consequence. First, there is the “no fruit,” and the Father distroys the unfruitful. Then there is the one that just bears ‘fruit,’ and the Father prunes that vine with the result that it bears ‘more fruit.’ And the last fruit is ‘much fruit’ and in v.8 that is the one that will glorify God.

This is similar to the parable of the seeds back in Matthew, where seeds under different conditions yield different result.

Won’t this be a glorious day?:

That glorious day is today – all the families of all the nations DO bow down before him in Christ’s One, Holy and Catholic {i.e. Greek catholicos = universal] Church and other Christians that look to Jesus as their Savior.

Unfortunately, not all the members of all the families do so yet, and almost all of us now do it imperfectly and often with divided hearts.

Let’s pray for ALL to come to a saving knowledge of our Lord, and for we ourselves to be better witnesses in deed and in truth!

Prodigalson, I’ve been there done that. Who hasn’t? I was once laughed at for
saying basically the same thing you just did. That person told me: You don’t trust
people, you just love them. You trust Jesus! Hard words to live by,but we have to!

Beachcomber, that is interesting, I see what you mean. It makes me want to try
and classify myself, but I can think myself into all 3…
