Well, here they are in the city of Philippi, in my missal it says they were there
for about 3 days. I guess they were just looking around, enjoying hotels and
restaurants maybe even, and finally they decided where they would preach. And
the place is…A women’s prayer group outside by the river? Not even inside the
city gate? They had to think about this for 3 days, and this is what they decided?
I’m just surprised they didn’t pick a synagogue or some more important-like place,
but, I guess Jesus never picked the most “important” people either. Then the head
woman in charge says they must stay at her house if they consider her a true
believer. Doesn’t that seem kind of mean in a way? If they don’t do whatever she
says, then she says they are telling her she’s not a true believer. That’s not
necessarily so, is it? Well, in a way I understand her. I was “mean” like that to
God as a new believer. I saw a part in the Bible which said something like, “the
Lord hears the prayers of a righteous man.” I told God that if He considered me
righteous, then He must heal my next door neighbor. He did it. I was overjoyed,
but, it was still wrong of me. God must do as He sees best, and it was wrong of
me to say He would be calling me unrighteous if He didn’t do as I say.
“let them sing for joy upon their couches.” – This part of the psalm makes me
laugh. I think of people on couches, with their remote controls, singing their
hearts out…
“When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father,” – In the
gospel, Jesus starts talking about what will happen when the Holy Spirit comes.
Let’s see, they’ve already healed people, cast out demons, proclaimed the gospel…
what’s left for the Holy Spirit to do in them? I guess the languages…
