I think I’ll call this first reading “letter of the law” vs “law of the Spirit”.
People think of the “law of the Spirit” as freeing them from the “letter of the law”,
which has proved impossible to keep. But are they really free? I say the law of
the Spirit is much harder. Think of “thou shalt not kill”. Then Jesus comes along
and says you are subject to hell for calling each other names. Think of “love your
neighbor as yourself”. Then Jesus comes along and says, “love one another as I
have loved you”. Think of tithing. They only had to pay ten percent. Now we have
to realize that everything is God’s, and what right do we have to spend any of it,
without God’s permission? Now that Jesus has laid down His life for us, there is
nothing more He can do for us. We have to learn by that, or we are just not going
to learn…
"a forgiving God you were to them, though requiting their misdeeds. "
This line from the psalm reminds me of yesterday’s “yes and no”.
A forgiving God, yet punishing misdeeds… it is yes and no at once
From today’s gospel, are there any commandments that have not been abolished?
We know there are only 3 now, 1 - Love God 2- Love neighbor 3 - love one another
as I have loved you. But are there any of the vast number of commandments
that have not been fulfilled save these? What about honoring the Lord’s day and
keeping it holy? What about some other ordinance out of the 6 or 700? Is there
any that has not been fulfilled and must continue to be practiced?
Note how if someone makes a mistake about it, they don’t lose heaven, but rather
are considered “least” in heaven. When I think of heaven, I never consider anyone
being “least”.
