So let's talk about today's readings 6/21/09

“Then he asked them, “Why are you terrified?
Do you not yet have faith?””

Today’s first reading, psalm, and gospel all relate to storms at sea…
Storms at sea mean many things to us, the hard things of life that are threatening
our very lives, physically and/or spiritually…

I don’t know what Jesus would consider the proper actions of the disciples who
were caught in the storm? Should they have all gone to sleep like Jesus? What should the disciples have done if they had had faith, and they were caught in a
storm?

Today is the day of St. Aloysius Gonzaga, who died helping plague victims.

Happy Fathers Day to all the Fathers and all the Fathers(priests)!

And in the second reading - the living should not live for themselves, but for Jesus.
Just exactly how does a person do that?
It is the only question worth asking.
We do so, so many things in a day. How do we do each of those things for Jesus?

Such a comforting reading. :heaven: There are countless times when Jesus calmed the storm inside of me!

I don’t know what Jesus would consider the proper actions of the disciples who

You raise some interesting questions.
As I thought about them, the answer for me was hinted at in the word “terrified”. If we have faith in God’s loving providence, there is never a need to be terrified. Even if our life is in danger, we should not fear - at least not to the point of being terrified. We know that God knows the most opportune time and manner for each of our deaths. So even when we are dying, we should have a trust in God’s will being the best.

As to what action/s by the disciples would have been proper, could only think of a couple things:

1. I wonder if they had prayed; if not, they should have. Praying itself might have helped calm them down.
2. I don’t think Jesus was upset because they woke Him, just the panicky way they did it (which manifested their interior lack of trust).

It is not a coincidence that both Jonah and Christ lay sleeping in a storm-tossed boat. The boat is a picture of the Church. The waves are the trouble cause by sin and sinners in the world. The sleeper in each case foreshadows dead Christ in His Church.
