“God did not make death,
nor does he rejoice in the destruction of the living”
Who made death?
The book of Wisdom contains many wonderful things to ponder and wonder about,
like the above line, and this one, also from the first reading…
"But by the envy of the devil, death entered the world,
and they who belong to his company experience it. "
What does it mean? We all experience death, unless Jesus comes back first…
Does it just mean everlasting death, or is there something more?
What can make us belong to the company of the devil? What is the smallest thing
that can make us belong to the company of the devil?

In the second reading, Paul asks the Corinthians for money, but is careful to ask
only from their surplus, stating that someday in the future, the very people they are
helping now may be helping them…
It does make me wonder at tithing, which I believe in. What is our surplus?
What “bills” are really necessary?

A couple of things about today’s gospel - The woman with a hemorrhage and “little
girl, get up” – I noted that the woman had the hemorrhage for 12 years, and that
the little girl was 12 years old. Also, the woman’s thought, “if only I can touch His
cloak”. How often do we feel this way on going to adoration? This is probably also
the feeling people have when chasing after visions. I want to know what Jesus felt
when He said He felt power go out of Him. What did that feel like? And finally, when
He told the little girls parents not to tell anyone about His raising their daughter from
the dead, what did He want them to say when they came out of that room with their
little girl alive? There was a crowd there in mourning of her death. Did He think they
wouldn’t notice if the parents were quiet?

Today is the day of St. Irenaeus, a disciple of St. Polycarp.

So what struck you about today’s readings? :bible1::twocents:

I would imagine that Jesus was trying to maintain His humble appearance. Certainly, there would be talk of the miracle when the little girl emerged from the room. He did lots of public miracles, and this one would have been very personal to the little girl’s family. So my guess would be that that He wanted to remain humble.

Tithing is an interesting topic. One is to tithe from one’s surplus or ‘increase,’ and it’s supposed to be 10%. Some people I know make the tithe a ‘bill’ to be paid rather than waiting till after everything else is paid. I think one is supposed to tithe on the gross rather than the net, too.

I’ve also seen people get into financial trouble because they tithed and ran out of money to pay for food or other bills. There are testimonies about how a person would tithe and then God would somehow work it out that all their bills would be paid and it’d be fine. That does not happen all the time and people can get into financial straits.

It is my personal opinion that the Lord looks on our hearts and lives and knows who can afford what. I don’t think He’s upset because a person doesn’t tithe because they simply don’t have the money.
