for the place where you stand is holy ground”
These are the memorable words from today’s first reading for me.
But I wonder, how is taking your shoes off a sign of respect?
I wonder how Moses learned to care for the flock of Jethro. He wasn’t raised caring
for sheep. What were Jethro’s instructions? Did Moses ever think about Jacob
through this and his experiences with shepherding and with God? Think how close to God St. Patrick became while caring for sheep. It seems so hard, always being responsible for them, even at night, but it must be easy, or why could he go to investigate the burning bush and leave the sheep alone? How long will sheep stay together when the shephard goes? Do they ever try to follow if the shepherd says “stay here”?
“and all my being, bless his holy name” – this is a prayer and a longing that
will come true in heaven… this psalm says to never forget all the good God has
done, and then makes a list to help… I wonder if Jacob and Moses thought about
all the good God had done for them, while they were shivering alone at night, with
one eye open for the sheep they were constantly responsible for?
“I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
for although you have hidden these things
from the wise and the learned
you have revealed them to the childlike” —
This is the great mystery of faith!
So…what are “these things”?
If you know what they are, aren’t you saying that you are childlike?
If you don’t know what they are, aren’t you saying that they haven’t been
revealed to you because you are wise in your own eyes?
If you say that you are childlike, are you still childlike?
Just what is childlike? Everything was revealed to Jesus… (except the end date)
