So let's talk about today's readings 7/24/09

How did we get 10 commandments out of this? I can get up to 4 commandments
out of the first paragraph, and up to 7 commandments out of the last paragraph on
coveting. So to get 10, we had to split up the first paragraph or the last one. How
was that decision made, and by who?

“The law of the LORD is perfect” (today’s psalm)
Well, the law of the Lord may be perfect, but our understanding of it is not. No one
can agree on how to keep these 10 commandments. Even Jesus’ law of love can be
interpreted differently by different people, because we don’t even have the power to
love as we should, it all comes from God.
“The command of the LORD is clear,
enlightening the eye” – I have to disagree about it being clear, but at the same time,
imagine the world without these 10 commandments? Compared to life without these
10 commandments, it is very clear.

What new thing could the priest possibly say about today’s well-known gospel?
I’d be interested to hear about anyone’s homily for today. Why do we keep
hearing this story over and over? It must be very important. So how do we get to
be more fertile soil, So that when the Word of God falls on it, it will grow properly?
Aren’t we being sprinkled with the Word of God daily in the daily readings?

Today is the day of St. James “the greater”, the first martyr among the apostles.

So what struck you about today’s readings? :twocents::bible1:

It is actually called the ten-words decalogue (δεκα λογος)
Exodus 34:28.
A more literal translation would be the Covenant of the ten words.
So what struck you about today’s readings? :twocents::bible1:

Just that there is a difference between passive and active clarity.
That the law is clear to the eyes, does not mean the eye sees the law clearly — it enlightens the eye means that when the law of the Lord is in one’s eye – THEN they can see.

One of those subtle things…

Scripture was written as one long word – the “word” of God.
The commandments were not…

There are 10 because that is a sacred number, not because there are actually 10.
Egyptians thought that any word that added up to 10 was divinely inspired, and good medicine (superstitious) – but there are Egyptians who left Egypt with the Israelites.

So, Moses is just saying that the covenant words come from God; not himself.

I wonder if any of the words actually DO add up to 10.
Hebrew letters are numbered…

As to the lamp of the eye — yeah, confuscious say…
