“…so a man from Bethlehem of Judah…”
Here, a man from the place of the Messiah, yet He is not a father of Messiah.
He brings the family to the country of Moab, decendants of the incestuous
relationship of Lot and his older daughter, and from here comes Ruth, mother
of the ancestors to Messiah. Later on, she goes to Bethlehem, to marry the
father of ancestors to Messiah. Ruth, one of the greatest examples of faith and
loyalty, comes from a remnant of Sodom and Gomorrah, the worst of evil and
disloyalty… God insists on bringing good from even the worst evil to those who
love Him…
Look at all the things the Lord does in today’s psalm. It is the Lord who does
all these things. When they happen, it is He who is to be thanked…
Do you have food? Are you free? Can you see? Can you sit up straight?
Are you protected from strangers today? Maybe you thank the police for that,
but it is God who did that…
“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart,
with all your soul, and with all your mind.
This is the greatest and the first commandment”
– Yet for some reason, this commandment was not even mentioned when the
rich young man asked, “what must I do to be saved?”
This commandment seems the hardest to understand and follow. Our priest
said that we can be sure we are following it when we put the needs and
desires of others ahead of the needs and desires of ourselves.
Our life isn’t really set up that way though. When we look for a parking place,
we look for a good one. We stand in a line, we don’t just let everyone go ahead
of us. We are happy if we buy the last item left of something that is on sale.
If we and our neighbor both needed a new car, guess who we would buy one
for if we had the money?
Today is the day of Pope Pius the tenth.
