Reading 1
Dt 4:1-2, 6-8

Moses said to the people:
“Now, Israel, hear the statutes and decrees
which I am teaching you to observe,
that you may live, and may enter in and take possession of the land
which the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you.
In your observance of the commandments of the LORD, your God,
which I enjoin upon you,
you shall not add to what I command you nor subtract from it.
Observe them carefully,
for thus will you give evidence
of your wisdom and intelligence to the nations,
who will hear of all these statutes and say,
‘This great nation is truly a wise and intelligent people.’
For what great nation is there
that has gods so close to it as the LORD, our God, is to us
whenever we call upon him?
Or what great nation has statutes and decrees
that are as just as this whole law
which I am setting before you today?”

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 15:2-3, 3-4, 4-5

R. (1a)One who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.
Whoever walks blamelessly and does justice;
who thinks the truth in his heart
and slanders not with his tongue.
R. One who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.
Who harms not his fellow man,
nor takes up a reproach against his neighbor;
by whom the reprobate is despised,
while he honors those who fear the LORD.
R. One who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.
Who lends not his money at usury
and accepts no bribe against the innocent.
Whoever does these things
shall never be disturbed.
R. One who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.

Reading II
Jas 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27 Dearest brothers and sisters:
All good giving and every perfect gift is from above,
coming down from the Father of lights,
with whom there is no alteration or shadow caused by change.
He willed to give us birth by the word of truth
that we may be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you
and is able to save your souls.
Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves.
Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this:
to care for orphans and widows in their affliction
and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

Gospel
Mk 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

When the Pharisees with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem
gathered around Jesus,
they observed that some of his disciples ate their meals
with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands.
—For the Pharisees and, in fact, all Jews,
do not eat without carefully washing their hands,
keeping the tradition of the elders.
And on coming from the marketplace
they do not eat without purifying themselves.
And there are many other things that they have traditionally observed,
the purification of cups and jugs and kettles and beds. —
So the Pharisees and scribes questioned him,
“Why do your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders
but instead eat a meal with unclean hands?”
He responded,
“Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written:
This people honors me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me;
in vain do they worship me,
teaching as doctrines human precepts.

You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition.” He summoned the crowd again and said to them,
“Hear me, all of you, and understand.
Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person;
but the things that come out from within are what defile.
“From within people, from their hearts,
come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder,
adultery, greed, malice, deceit,
licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly.
All these evils come from within and they defile.”

“you shall not add to what I command you nor subtract from it.”
– Do you think anything has been added or subtracted from what God has
commanded? If so, what?

"One who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord"
“Whoever does these things
shall never be disturbed”
– What does that mean? Disturbed in what way?
Jesus was just, and was often disturbed, eventually to the point of death!

“All good giving and every perfect gift is from above”
– God is to be thanked for every good thing, because it comes from Him, and that
includes any good that we ourselves can do.
“to care for orphans and widows in their affliction
and to keep oneself unstained by the world.”
– Even if we can do these 2 things, the things that characterize pure religion,
God is to be thanked…

“From within people, from their hearts,
come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder,
adultery, greed, malice, deceit,
licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly."
– Here is a list of things that Jesus considers evil.
I notice that some of these things can be done accidentally,
especially that last one. So these evil things that come from
inside must be actively and forcefully fought against daily, or
they will overtake a person, and come flowing out, polluting the world…

So what struck you about today’s readings? :bible1::twocents:

WOW!:extrahappy:

So, I was in Mass yesterday, and I decided to wear a head covering. I have been thinking about it for quite some time for various reasons, but up until yesterday, didn’t have the courage. So, I sit down with my husband and the first scripture is read. *Tradition, tradition, tradition, don’t add or take away anything that I have given you. *

I thought, wow, that is an interesting scripture. I think it hit home more because, here I was, wearing a veil when most women no longer do. Then the Psalm about living a just life, what to do , what not to do, and the promise that those who DO live a just life will be in God’s presence (IMO, never forsaken).

Then there was the reading of James about being doers and not just hearers. I thought, ok, what are you trying to tell me God. I kind of began to squirm a little bit.

Then the kicker was the Gospel… *There are those who give me lip service, and there are those who have their hearts in the right place. *

I was so on fire for God this summer. It was such an incredible feeling. I had this yearning to learn and learn and learn. I just couldn’t get enough. I would spend all of my free time either reading books or on here as well as daily devotionals, prayer, etc. It was amazing. But then, I began to feel alone, really alone. It seemed like no matter what I did or read or prayed, I was by myself. I tried to continue. I was reading St. Faustina’s diary at the time, so I know that others have gone through something similar (mine wasn’t nearly as bad as hers) so I was encouraged to make it through. But something happened in July, I don’t know what, and I just stopped. I stopped the daily readings. I stopped the prayers (except for a morning rosary during the week). I made excuses for not needing confession while still receiving the Eucharist. I stopped visiting this site. I even stopped writing in my journal… I gave it all up for about a month. But, yesterday, I felt called to a new conversion of heart.

What a hypocrite I have been! I wore this veil yesterday, and I was going to receive communion (which I shouldn’t). It is ironic because one of the very reasons why I wanted to wear the veil in the first place was that I wanted to do it as a way for me to show Christ further reverence for His Body. But after listening to the homily which was so on point with the scriptures, I realized how wrong I was. It is ok for me to wear the veil, but it doesn’t hide my heart from Christ. So, if my heart isn’t pure from sin, then the veil means nothing. That is when I realized that I couldn’t defile Christ’s Body anymore with my unclean and impure heart. My heart was unclean not only from lack of confession, but because I was in a place in my faith that was blossoming fruit and glowing for Christ, and then I became dead, yet I still received His Body. I had those very things in my heart that Christ spoke about in the Gospel. I defiled His Body because I had those things within me. I did not fully recognize the seriousness of it until yesterday.

Anyway, this is just a little personal testimony about what I got out of the readings yesterday. I got up extra early this morning to make sure that I got the daily readings in and some quiet reflection and journalling time. I am overflowing with joy. I realize through that month of famine that God will never leave me, even when I feel alone. I just have to trust and persevere. I hope, through the grace of God, that I never doubt Him again.

Peace and love,

Jessica

Wow, what a testimony. I am tempted to say 2 things. First of all, why worry so
much if you wear a veil or not, God is looking at your heart, not what you are wearing.
Also, why are you worried about confession if you did not commit a mortal sin?
Your venial sins are forgiven near the beginning of mass.

But, I’m not going to say those things. They are things an outsider would say.
A person who knows nothing about what is going on between you and God. If
God wants you to wear a veil, then you should wear one. And if He wants you to
go to confession every week or every day, you should do it. I know what He wants
me to do, because I am slowly taught through prayer. If I don’t do it, it is a great
bother, until I listen, even if no one else in the world or church teaching would say
that it is required. It is very exciting to go to prayer after you have done “that thing”
whatever it is. You might as well just do it, because He won’t tell you the next
thing until you do. He is the only One who knows what you personally need next.

Blessings and much happiness in your walk with God…:blessyou:

P.S. God is real…it is impossible to be alone…regardless of how you feel…
Never underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep. Get one,
before you decide whether you feel alone or not… I truly believe this
was Mother Teresa’s problem…

It is funny you mention a good night’s sleep. That is what my husband is always saying (about everything not just being alone). It’s a miracle cure. I’m finally starting to agree with him. hahaha…

Thank you for your kind words. I do feel called to wear a head covering. I know it isn’t required, but it is a “sacrifice” that I feel called to make. I was so nervous because of the very words that you didn’t want to say. I didn’t know how to explain it to someone who may walk up to me and say, “You know you don’t have to wear that right?” As for confession, you are right, only God and I know what is going on with my heart. I know that confession is meant for mortal sins, but after a month, regardless of whether I’ve committed mortal sins or not, I begin to feel grimy inside and it is like going to priest and having someone “holier than me” listen to what I feel like are awful things that I’ve done removes a huge weight off of my shoulders. I know that through Christ our sins are forgiven. I’m just so thankful that He gave us those men on earth that through Him and the Holy Spirit can help guide us back to the narrow path of righteousness.
