The first reading asks us to recall the mighty works of God through His chosen
people, as they were led out of slavery, into the promised land. I have come to
the conclusion that there is no need to seek a promised land, and no need to
seek freedom from slavery. If we are enslaved by our sins, we are in slavery.
And even if we live in a “promised land”, like America for instance, it is no promised
land when freedom FROM God reigns supreme. Freedoms and promised lands
are within us, no matter what circumstance we physically live in.
“** I remember the deeds of the Lord”**
How will we remember the deeds of the Lord, unless we memorize scripture?
Supposing we are blind one day, or imprisoned with no bible? All we will have
is what we have memorized. Also, how will we remember the deeds of the Lord,
that He has done for us personally?
Our priest says we will know we are following today’s gospel if we put the needs
and desires of others before our own needs.
Today is the day of Pope Sixtus II and St. Cajetan.
Two years ago, when I first started attending daily mass, it was the day of Pope
Sixtus. He was arrested while saying mass, and executed. Since that day, I
have wondered what to do if guys with guns came to take our priest away while
he was saying mass, and I still don’t know. Should we stand between them and
the priest, or all block the door? Should we use some kind of force to save him,
or should we “offer no resistance to evil?” How do we “deny ourselves” in this
situation? How do we “take up our cross”? How do we follow Jesus in this
instance?
