I never really believed your nonsense anyway.

But thanks for the five fun years of screwing my life around!

I’ll recenter my faith in Christ now. Real Christianity is faith in the teacher and not the teaching. That’s not to say the teachings aren’t important, but they come secondary.

My revelation came at Mass during Lent. I decided to attend Mass every day for Lent. One day at communion, I realized that I was going to Mass with a sense that God owed me certain graces for going to Mass. I was working for God’s grace. I realized I can’t do that. I cannot merit a single grace. Some of you will say that that is not Church teaching, but Catholic Answers even has a tract on how we can merit some graces. Oh, but you’ll distinguish between “actual” and “sanctifying graces.” Nonsense. Grace is grace, and none of it can be merited.

Rant. I’m tired of the discussions, at least on this forum, which tend to go nowhere.

Wow, well I’m sorry you feel this way and feel so bitter towards Christ’s Church. God bless you and may the Holy Spirit fill you with strength as you continue to genuinely seek God’s will for your life.:o

I think it was Augustine who said, roughly, that merit is not “God, give what you owe” but “God, give what you have promised.”

All the same, you seem very strongly convinced, so best of luck to you. You’ll be in all our prayers.

So, the fact that you practiced a works-based faith, even while knowing that Catholicism doesn’t really teach that (after all, where does it say that we are required to attend daily Mass?) means that Catholicism is wrong? 🤷

Go in peace, and don’t let the door hit you on the back, but don’t blame the Church for your failings.

For any remaining lurkers, we only merit when we cooperate with Christ who has all the power. When we unite ourselves to His Passion, to then deny that we can merit, is to deny Him.

You are dead wrong my friend.

If you found yourself thinking that rubbish, then the fact is that it’s between your ears and nowhere in the teachings of the Catholic Church and you need to make very sure that you find and adhere to the truth.

If you choose to misinterpret the tract you mention, (and I have read it), the no wonder you have misunderstandings about the Catholic faith. I spent far more time than you have so far in clearing up all the stuff that I thought I knew after growing up in the faith for about 17 years. I somehow doubt that you have prayed and studied your way through all this and realized that what you found yourself thinking is wrong in the Catholic faith.

God bless you.

Jesus Christ is the Word. It’s not possible to separate the Man from His teachings.

If you were really attending Mass because of the graces you felt God would owe you, that is your personal failing. We all fall short of God’s grace. It’s mature to admit your failings and learn from them. Blaming others helps nothing. But it takes a while to learn that.

How are you going to center your life around Christ when you are forgoing the Eucharist?

Oh well, peace be with you.

Please don’t abandon our Lord in his tabernacle. I am sad to hear this. Have you considered to spend an hour before Him in eucharistic adoration. I will pray for you.

Arch Bishop Fulton Sheen once said (paraphraising here) “…they looked Truth right in the face, and rejected him, and condemed him to death”

When Calculous is hard to understand, does one abondon it?

When a relationship with your wife (U_Love_Ur_Wife) begins to leave a peak and enter a valley, do you leave the journey for another woman?

If it is Jesus you are seeking, than seek.
If it is people who also stumbled over the same mental hurdles you’re stumbling over that you seek… then we should all Pray for you.

If a non Christian tells you that don’t believe in your newly forming nonsense, what will you tell them… that you believe in it bc its in your gut? Good luck… There is so much to the Catholic Church, that can’t be dismissed because you are having trouble with it.

Lastly … why pick this forum to discuss such a thing? Just a suguestion, what if you wrote “I folks, I’m really struggling with …X,…Y…Z” and see where it goes.

You wouldn’t probably appriciate me comming into your home, and saying “your family stinks, your traditions are nonsense, the way you do this or that is stupid” … I’m sure your responce to that kind of hypothetical rant would be “you aren’t my family, why are you saying these things…what weight does your opinion have when you don’t understand where we are coming from”

Again, good Luck to you.

The big thing to me and this applies not only to the op but any leaving the Church, consider this, how can you leave the Eucharist? Because that is what you will be doing, you will not find Christ in the Eucharist in any Protestent Church. Please think this one over and pray some more.

How in the world can anybody walk away from the Eucharist?!?

Man, that’s whack!

That’s my thinking too.

There was a very nice Presbyterian pastor of a church just down the street from my parish who converted to our most holy faith and one day I saw him at breakfast after daily Mass and sat down with him and asked what it was that had brought him to conversion to the Catholic faith and he looked me straight in the eye and said, " The Eucharist Michael. I had to have the body and blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ." I almost cried right there.

He passed away a few months later (he was pretty infirm and about 80+ years old) and I hope to see him fit and joyful in the Kingdom of Heaven when I come there too.

I’d as soon die than try to live without the Eucharist.

Dear I Love My Wife,

God Bless you that you love your wife. I pray you always will.

I am very sorry that you feel the way you do. You are still our brother. I fear that your poor heart has been wounded somehow.

I think it is possible that you are misunderstanding the Catholic teaching.

Prior to being friends with God, we can do nothing to deserve grace, much less merit it. This is dogma. God did not save us because we deserved it, no, for “we had all gone astray, like sheep without a shepherd”.

And the merit the Church speaks of, which is only possible when you are in a state of friendship with God, is simply love itself, the love of God that is poured out into your soul, a love that God gives to you freely, because he has promised to do so, because he wants to, because that is why He made us, that we might share in His love, receive it, and give it away to others, and that through our loving, he might give graces to others, so that by His love, we love others like He loves them.

sanctifying grace is none other than love, a spiriutal life that comes from God, that He gives to you because He loves you and wants you to love Him and other creatures back with this very same love. Behold all grace that dwells in all the righteous is sharing in the same love that exists in God, in the Trinity. This is the reward, not some great some of money because you lost weight (like a show I know of). The reward of loving with God’s Love, and BY God’s love, is MORE of God’s love.

God is Love.

God does not owe you, or any of us, anything, strictly speaking. He has rather freely chosen to PROMISE us more love when we cooperate with His love, and this is the only sense that He “owes us” anything. And this reward he gives us is not superficial.

When Faustina visited her family away from the convent, she cried tears of joy with her dear brother, so close were they to themselves and to Jesus, their Savior, and to the Father, their common Father, and to the Virgin, their common Mother. And they were both very poor, but rich in God’s treasures, which are and were Love.

Just remember that God loves you, I Love My Wife, and that his rewards are none other than love, because that is why he made you, that is why he made any free creatures, so that they could have His Love, have it eternally, and share it with their fellow creatures eternally.

OP: May God be with you on your journey. I do hope you don’t feel the need to burn any bridges on that journey. Peace be with you +
