Hiring a lawyer seems like an extreme thing to do, especially for a college student who probably doesn’t have much money. And since the professor is part of the liberal academia, there’s no guarantee that the dean or whoever this would be reported to would do anything about it.
The best thing to do would be wait until the end of the semester and then get together with any other students that are affected by this professor’s remarks and go to report him. If you have other students to back you up in what you say, you have a better chance of being believed and of getting some results. Take some notes on what this guy says and when he says them to show that you’re serious about this.
Before you do any of that, you need to speak up. Quietly, firmly, no nonsense, well documented.

hey, djeter, I get that this whole thing has you upset, rightfully so, but you are not being remotely charitable to newstheman, IMO. Maybe your posts aren’t coming off as you intend? You’ll notice that he or she says that he does defend the faith; he elected not to comment on an off-the-cuff but offensive remark this one time. In addition, you may not think that saying, hey, it happens everywhere is shifting the focus, but it really is, and I tend to agree that it serves no purpose in this context.

It is profoundly disturbing that people blatantly ignore the facts, and here I’m thinking of the Oakland and Wisconsin cases vis-a-vis the Pope particularly, but news is right, that unless you have an opponent who is willing to listen, not just have their mind made up already, there is not much to be gained. Not sure that the middle of class is the time for that, and that was a prudential judgment that news made; since he was the one there, shouldn’t he be given the benefit of the doubt?

You make it sound like this is just another “point of view.” You’re a relativist knucklehead and your respect for your “journalist academics” is pathetic; your silence in the face of their attacks is gutless. Grow up.

And I don’t “raise important issues.” I speak the truth and defend my Church – hardly an “overestimation.” Try it yourself someday.

Please reconcile your name calling of the OP with this passage from 2 Timothy 2:23-26

23
Avoid foolish and ignorant debates, for you know that they breed quarrels.
24
A slave of the Lord should not quarrel, but should be gentle with everyone, able to teach, tolerant,
25
correcting opponents with kindness. It may be that God will grant them repentance that leads to knowledge of the truth,
26
and that they may return to their senses out of the devil’s snare, where they are entrapped by him, for his will.

So its left to the Catholics, the meek and humble ones!
But humility does not mean one must be walked all over, never defending oneself. Every mass I’ve attended since this recent media frenzy, has had a priest state precisely in the homily to be vocal and defend the faith, defend Pope Benedict. And this is at numerous parishes and priests from at least 4 different countries of origin. So stand up, and defend the faith. Catholics have been silent too long, relying on the ordained, now it’s time for use laymen to speak up and defend the Church Jesus gave us as a precious gift.

dj, I understand you are upset. We all are.

But if this is your way of dealing with it, you are leading right into the hands of the ones that you so hate. You seem to be guided by a passionate anger and fierceness and some hidden motivation. That isn’t what the Lord commanded.

You have completely hijacked this thread with your high horse and noble attitude. Get off of it please.

Relativist knucklehead? Excuse me? Are you even serious? Did you even read my post with a clear mind and a clear heart?

At no point did I give reverence to journalist academics either. I was merely pointing out something about them, and what it is about them that makes things so.

I defend my faith at every given opportunity and at all costs. However, this is not one of those cases where it would have been prudent to do so. In a class of known athiests and an arrogant lecturer making a snide and off the cuff remark and now I must stand up and high horse preach to these people? Good grief man get a grip on reality.

My friend, you need a lesson in humility and knowing that what you do know actually isn’t much at all.

And I stick by what I said. Read it again. And don’t you then try call me and enemy of the Church.

Satan can get into us, and what better way and time then during a scandal? It is at these times we need to be calm, but firm. And not calling people relativist knuckleheads and saying they have no guts. Please man, you don’t know me.

When I said that you are shifting the focus and blame I was quoting people. It isn’t exactly my view. But I still think it is a good point!

Saying, oh but there are 5000 cases of abuse here and there means absolutely nothing. We are talking about the Church! There should be no cases at all!

Dj read my posts again, and pray, and don’t react like that. It’s not christian like, its misdirected and its exactly how scandalous people want you to react.

👍 my thoughts exactly!

I know how you feel. I go to a liberal university where there will be a “Gay and Lesbian Prom”. My professors reel against anyone who has a socially conservative stance on issues. One class wanted to chase me out when I said I was pro life. Heck I was even called a “fake” Republican for being socially conservative in the Young Repubs group. It seems no matter where you turn, people are attacking the faith. And, it is true that Muslims get a preferential treatment by not getting anything said about, but Christians are the scapegoats. Keep the faith, remember they hate Christ, and not you. He exposes their works as evil and they do not like it. Therefore, pray for them and stay strong! My prayers are with you.God Bless

One thought, maybe because this statement was so outrageous that while it is more offensive, it is unbelievable and potentially less damaging.

Pick up and read The New Anti-Catholicism: The Last Acceptable Prejudice. I just started reading it and so far it is fabulous and may help you in fighting these narrow-minded “thinkers” who fail to do their research while they claim to be experts. The author is Philip Jenkins (who is NOT Catholic)

Grrr

Whats with the media!!

I study Journalism. In one of my lectures today my lecturer was discussing how “relevant topics” are a useful way of getting your name known using social networking etc.

Anyway, he showed us something he had written because it was relevant. It was called “A plan for the Vatican”. Basically, it said that all priests should have sex with each other and nuns. He then added, “that way, it’ll keep those disgusting perverts and their pope off my kids”.

I didn’t say anything at the time, and I don’t think I will. It will only inspire him and others. They love the scandal, its what drives them. But it really annoyed me. That level of bias and hatred for the Holy Church has infiltrated into the minds of my own lecturer (who is meant to teach his students to stick to the story and not opinionate). It’s sad. But I actually feel sorry for him (and others) because I think… How much does it say about you that you jump on the bandwagon?

Anyway, thought I’d share that. This recent abuse has reaaallllyyy done some damage. 😦
I think he has some kind of superiority complex. he actually thinks the pope is attacking his kids. I think he’s demented. you should point out that people from his profession sexually abuse kids 4 times more.

Hi, everyone,

I think the most appropriate response to anyone who makes a negative statement about the Catholic Church is the following (I will tailor my suggestion based on this thread, to a professor):

"Professor, with all due respect, it hurt me to hear you associate the Catholic Church with child molestation. While I am not sure whether you’ve studied Catholic teaching, the Catholic Church’s laws are based solely on love of neighbor; the Catholic Church does not, of course, under ANY circumstances encourage or teach child abuse. Unfortunately, people sometimes use their free will to engage in repulsive conduct such as child abuse. This is an entirely separate issue from what the Catholic Church’s mission is, what is represents and what it teaches. "
