So my priest didn't give me a penance

Kinda weird, but I went to Confession today, and after I left, I realized I wasn’t given a penance. I didn’t even say an Act of Contrition in there with him. I think he may have forgotten, cuz we talked about some other stuff too, but what should I do? Anyone else had this before?

Say the act of contrition yourself. I don’t know that a penance has too be given for the confession to be valid. Did he give absolution? If not, I’d go back for another confession. If he did, I’d think you’re good to go.

I agree… say an act of contrition. often priests assume that you say one before or after especially if there is a long line for confession… Otherwise, I am sure that there is another place in the area (call) to go to confession… Say extra prayers or make a sacrifice for a penance… sorry I can’t give any more info… good luck

Eamon:

Did he give you absolution?

Did he say, "I absolve you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit?"

If he did, “You’re good to go,” as one of the other posters said. If he didn’t give you ABSOLUTION, find him A.S.A.P. and tell him! Then do CONFESSION RIGHT THERE!

Since he probably did give you ABSOLUTION, for the sake of your own clarity and so that you KNOW that you had a full PURPOSE OF AMENDMENT, say an act of contrition on your own. You can do that NOW.

O my God,
I am heartily sorry for
having offended Thee,
and I detest all my sins,
because I dread the loss of heaven,
and the pains of hell;
but most of all because
they offend Thee, my God,
Who are all good and
deserving of all my love.
I firmly resolve,

Yeah, I said the Act of Contrition when I realized I didn’t do it in there, and he did give me absolution. Last night I said an extra Rosary before I went to bed as well.

And as for a line, I was it. That’s a shame, actually, that more people don’t take the initiative to go down for Confession a bit more often.

I went to confession Saturday afternoon. When I finished the priest asked if I wanted to improve and be a better person. I replied, “Yes.” Apparently that passed for my act of contrition because after my ‘yes’ he went right into my penance and absolution. Went I went into the church to do my penance, I added an act of contrition. —KCT
