So on Nickelodeon tonight... (aka the moral decline of our culture)

Tonight, I walked in the room while my younger sister was watching a new episode of Wendell & Vinnie titled “Mock Law & Order” on the Nickelodeon channel. To begin:
In the show one of the characters used the word sluttier. This is acceptable on a PG show!!! At the end of the show, a woman walks into the room and addresses Vinnie: “Come on Vinnie, let’s get out of here. I have reservations for dinner and dessert… and dessert.” She then proceeds to walk her fingers up from his navel to caress his cheek and jaw, while saying that she’s very attracted to him. She then leaves. When Vinnie’s sister questions the woman’s motives; Vinnie barks “Mind your own business!” laugh track plays and he follows. I guess this is par for the course these days?? Go Vinne, get some!! We applaud your pursuits of premarital sex! :banghead:
What morals are they instilling in children?? I understand that PG stands for Parental Guidance, but I had always thought of it as being G-rating with possible punching added in. Every day I am shocked at what the media holds up as normal, good, and acceptable. I guess I don’t “watch enough TV.” Perhaps, I’m becoming a bit of a curmudgeon in my old age 25. :rolleyes: Maybe it’s all the Masses I’ve been attending this past week. Is this what righteous anger feels like?

I’m praying that I find a wife who, along with other important qualities, won’t want cable/dish in the house.
I don’t think I’m overreacting, am I??

Was the “dessert” line necessarily implying sex? Because I think if it was making out/etc. stuff like that, then that’s the type of stuff that was hinted at on all those 90’s sitcoms I used to watch and I don’t really see a problem with that.

I’ve never seen the show, or this episode, so I wouldn’t know. It seems like this guy is an adult and in that sense, yeah, the general populace is not at all concerned about kissing a date. Sex is another matter.
 
Kisper, you are NOT over reacting. The scene, as you described, certainly implies some sort of sexual nature. My husband and I look at each other with saucer sized eyes all the time as these things pop up in front of our 10 and 12 year old boys. My mother mentioned to me recently that in the past, they weren’t even allowed to say the word “pregnant” on t.v. and the husbands and wives even had separate/same room beds, just to be decent on t.v… I really wish it were still that way!! The more they air things like you describe here, the more our children think this **** is o:k and normal. And then it becomes ok and normal. Only advice I can give is to keep this junk away from your kids (that you have someday) for as long as you possibly can. It won’t be forever, though :confused: And when it comes up, let them know how inappropriate it is by talking to them about it and turning it off. Sad that we have to go through this, but I’m not sure how else to handle it-maybe write the networks?? Oh-and work you hardest, do your best, and sacrifice anything you must to send them to Catholic school! Worth every penny and has even helped me to know how to be a better parent 🙂

In the age where it’s considered acceptable and “important” for teachers to read kindergarten children stories about a turtle with two dads, I think nickelodeon is pretty par for the course. The sooner society can sexualize kids, the sooner they can turn them away from God and conservatism, and lead them into sexual promiscuity and liberalism. If you can turn kids sexual at younger ages, you’ll open them to all kinds of depravity. When I was a boy, if friends joked about kissing another boy, it all made us laugh but there was a real revulsion. We were kids and weren’t trying to hurt anyone. But it was “natural” to be disgusted at the thought of same sex physical encounters of any kind. I know that might make me sound offensive to some and I apologize if that’s the case. I just hate how far the militant homosexual agenda has been pushed in schools. They shouldn’t be pushing heterosexuality in schools, let alone the countless forms of deviance now considered acceptable, heroic, whatever you wanna call it. If anyone knows where a large rock is, I would be happy to go crawl under it for the rest of my days. Satan have this country. God’s flame will purge it (figuratively though if we don’t get our stuff together soon it might just be literally :()
 
TV has no place in a Christian home…
a choice of putting God first, or evil and ludity that is the path to hell.

Parents have an obligation to set an example of raising their children to be of a Catholic mind, or to recognize the sin of setting a bad example for their children to follow.

letting children watch tv today, is equivilant to condoning wars of revenge, socialism, bigotry against the Jewish or Islamic, or a hoast of other evils that are common place today…

if you dont stand against evil, then you condon it, you commit evil yourself, denial of God…

the real war of today is the war on religion, TV is at the forfront of the war on religion…

I disagree with this, there are still a few good things on. That said, this particular program would have made me angry or at least irritated. :mad: I certainly wouldn’t be watching, especially since it sounds like a comedy without much redeeming value.

So, yes, our culture is certainly declining. You are right. But let’s not say that an entire medium has become nothing more than a tool of the devil.
 
We do not watch nick here. Nick jr maybe but I find my six year old feels a little old for some of those shows. We also watch Disney junior because I oddly found some questionable content on the regular family station. So for the most part, we stick to telethon retro. 80’s cartoons which for the most part are ok. Infomercial annoying.

We also use Netflix a lot. And ewtn kids has a few shows we pvr too.

There’s not a lot I’d let her just sit down and watch by herself. She’s not old enough to understand…
 
there is so much trash everywhere in pop media… my husband likes to watch tv and wants to get cable soon :confused: I personally feel like watching garbage fills your head with it even if you know better. Everytime I see a new kid’s movie there is almost always a part or more that I’m like they put that in a kid’s movie?!! smh… stuff like this makes me worried about how to raise my daughter right in this world.
 
And so the decline of morals and the rise of the twin evils of moral relavatism and secularism continue.
 
I would take a sledgehammer to the TV if DH would let me. We do NOT allow our children to watch TV that isn’t on Netflix or Amazon (ie no commercials) or on demand, and the list of things they watch has about three things on it.
 
No, you’re not overreacting. I actually stopped watching T.V. on a regular basis over a year ago. (lots of people think it’s weird; they don’t understand why I would do that.) Now, when I do watch T.V., it’s kid’s shows with my special needs sister, or it’s EWTN. It’s completely ridiculous what most people seem to think is moral and ok.
 
Recently I watched a show geared to teenagers. It was about high school students messing with the teacher’s love life. You never would have seen the Beaver or Wally be so disrespectful to an adult. No wonder kids have no respect for anything.

Err i beg to disagree but it is possible. I watch virtually not broadcast or cable tv in my house. I have 2 that’s right 2 shows i regularly watch on a weekly basis and i do so when they are on demand at the channel’s website. I watch no news or reality shows either. I get all my news through a news feed on my phone. If I find the headline interesting I will read the article, most times I don’t. I also never read the comments since the nonsense that is spouted there is unbelievable. I’m a much calmer, saner and happier person since I began doing this and I recommend it to everyone.

I don’t watch any TV at all, at least not through an actual television set. I get everything through the internet. I can watch it any time I want, at whatever pace I choose. I think I waste less time than I did, now that I only watch things I actively seek out. I never end up watching a pointless program just because “there’s nothing else on”.

I probably should stop reading the comments on articles. They tend to make me sick. 😊

We also have gotten rid of satellite TV at our house. Cable doesn’t come down our road :D, so no issues there. We have wireless Internet service, so watching streaming video can sometimes be a challenge. It really makes you think about what you’re willing to watch when you have to sit through periods (sometimes multiple) of “rebuffering.”

One of the main reasons we got rid of the satelitte was the crapola that has become the regular programming on Disney, Nickelodeon, and other “children’s” channels. Seriously, you sometimes have to filter out stuff on Sesame Street for cryin’ out loud. We’ve kown forever that network programming is (mostly) garbage and we’re selective about what we allow our kids (and ourselves for that matter) to watch. Are we perfect? No. But we do try.

Please don’t tell me this is really happening in our schools. :(. Sadly, my husband and I agree with your sentiments. We rarely watch TV simply because of all the subtle hints of SSA being thrown into commercials. So, we choose to keep the TV off in favor of screened videos.

Well, I don’t think ALL TV is bad…I won’t be giving up my Notre Dame football, basketball, hockey and soccer without a fight! 😃
