On channel 4 (UK) a programme called ‘Sex Education’ was on - basically a docu on sex.

Me and my h2b & a couple of friends were watching and the statistics were so sad,

here in the UK we have the highest teen pregnancy and highest sti in Europe approx 1 in 10 have chlamydia.

Last year just over 1million were tested for sti’s and 35% had something.

The average woman has 10 different sexual partners with men having approx 16.

I was sat with my friends and it started us talking we are all 22 and all finished uni last year.

My best friend has had 21 sexual partners, her boyfriend had had 12, my other friend has had 17. They didnt think that this was bad.
We all went to the best catholic school in lancashire, a school which gets the best gcse rates and yet I know of 40 girls in my school year of 103 (girls) who have at least one baby or an abortion.

This seems to be the norm here amongst teenagers and young adults.

In my local church and also the church I attend when I was at uni I was one of about 5 under 30’s in attendance

They showed on the programme a group of 17 year old boys who use their parents jacuzzi to have teen sex parties where they find random girls on bebo and invite them over at weekends for drinking and sex.

I am so scared by the lack of morals in my country, I have a chequered past and I am so ashamed by the things that I did when I was young and damaged but so many people just seem not to care.

I dont really know the statistics in america but this twinned with the high number of abortions in this country is seriously making me think of moving to the states - the good people on this forum seem to far out number the catholic influences in my own life.

None of my friends or work colleagues (Im an accountant for one of the big 4) understand why me and my h2b dont live together nor do his parents. I have been laughed at and called naeive for not wanting to move in till marriage.

I have done so many things in the wrong order I am determined to start married life on the right track, but what hope is their for so many in my country? A supposed upstanding christian world power.

I am just so sad right now.

Hang in their Bunny, we can still be rocks of faith against the tide. I believe the words from Our Lady of Fatima, resonate very true for our world today.

July 13, 1917:
“If people attend to my requests, Russia will be converted and the world will have peace. If not, she [Russia] will scatter her errors throughout the world, provoking wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred, the Holy Father will have much to suffer, and various nations will be destroyed.”

Our Lady appeared to Jacinta several times between December 1919 and February 1920. Our Lady told her many things including:

"The sins of the world are very great … If men only knew what eternity is, they would do everything in their power to change their lives.”

"You must pray much for sinners and priests and religious.”

"Fly from riches and luxury; love poverty and silence; have charity, even for bad people.”

"More souls go to Hell because of sins of the flesh than for any other reason.”

"Certain fashions will be introduced that will offend Our Lord very much.”

"The Mother of God wants more virgin souls bound by the vow of chastity.”

"Woe to women wanting in modesty.”

"Confession is a sacrament of mercy and we must confess with joy and trust.”

"Many marriages are not of God and do not please Our Lord.”

"Let men avoid greed, lies, envy, blasphemy, impurity.”

"Never speak ill of anyone. Never complain or murmur. Be very patient, for patience leads us to Heaven.”

"Our Lady can no longer uphold the arm of her Divine Son which will strike the world. If people amend their lives, Our Lord will even now save the world, but if they do not, punishment will come.”

"If the government of a country leaves the Church in peace and gives liberty to our Holy Religion, it will be blessed by God.”

I hear you loud and clear on this bunny!

It seems like there are almost no strong Catholics left in this country, but I wouldn’t be fooled into thinking it is any better in the states. The 5:1 population ratio (approx) between the states and here (UK) just means more USA people are likely to post on this forum.

You can, and must, however, learn to live in amongst the immorality to be the light of the world.

If the few faithful Catholics all leave in search of a land where immorality is gone, what hope will there be left for the wretched world.

The Lord needs you to be firm in your faith in your job, with your family, at Church, and all this within the immoral world we have to live in.

Today at daily mass, I was surprised to see an old best friend with whom I have little contact now, be there with his girlfriend. After I had finished praying after mass, I turned to see them both together standing and praying before one of the many crucifixes at the back of our Church.

Do not be afraid! 🙂

Unfortunately that is not new.

30 years ago one of my husband’s co-workers was telling me that she broke up with her boyfriend for 6 months. After that time they got back together and he asked her, “I know I was your first but how many men have you slept with since me?” She had to count on her fingers to come up with the answer: “13”. She didn’t think there was anything was wrong with that.

At a Tupperware meeting at my manager’s house one night, the women started comparing their husbands’ attributes – and I’m not talking eye colour.

When I had failed to chime in with my comments (an unusual occurrence for me) they asked me point blank “So, how does your husband compare to other men?” The look on all their faces was priceless when I replied that I had no basis for comparison. “You haven’t had sex with anyone but your husband???” Only one said that that was a good thing but I’ll bet I was the topic of conversation after I left that night.

I think the only difference between now and then is that we talk about it more now. Certainly when I worked in the local clinic 30 years ago the most often treated condition was gonorrhea. Several cases a day in fact. We didn’t even need to say the word, the doctor would just come out and say “3.5 & 1” and we knew what to give and what was wrong.

I’ll never forget the young woman I had come in one night. The public health nurse had told her to report to the clinic and it fell to me to tell her that her boyfriend had tested positive for gonorrhea and named her as a contact so she would need to be treated. When she looked saddened I asked if she was aware that he had been unfaithful to which she replied, “I suspected he was seeing his wife again.”

I think a lot of these problems are related to alcohol usage in the USA and the UK. The USA and the UK are two countries where teenagers and young adults get drunk a lot. It’s no coincidence that both of our countries have high rates of teenage pregnancy and STI’s.

People don’t get drunk in Europe as much as they do in the UK, and teenage pregnancy and STI’s are lower.

Unfortunately, the USA has similar problems to the UK, and both are cultures where people get drunk a lot. However, I think things are slightly worse in the UK than in the US.

Hi there Bunny,

I had to respond as I have a certain affection for the British. I spent a term in England while (whilst) at uni and loved the country but was concerned about the social mores as well. Although we have the same problems here in the US, I would say the UK has been more impacted by secularism.

Hold tight to your values and don’t let anyone pressure you or persuade you from changing them. Your life and the decisions you are making will be a witness to others, even if results are not visible right away. Also, your life will be so much more enriched personally when you follow Christ’s way. So don’t give up! I experienced the same thing here in the States.

It’s bad everywhere. There was a lot of teenage pregnancy back in the 80s when I was in highschool. Things are much worse now. There is a movement here to stress abstinence but the liberals are fighting it tooth and nail.

I usually just keep my mouth shut when coworks talk about how good or bad their bf/husbands are. I’d rather not hear it I consider that kind of thing private. One got so graphic I swear she was doing it to provoke me into saying something but I just ignored her. If someone wants to share such things I guess it’s their perogative but I do feel sorry for their husbands or wives. 🤷

You handled the situation very well. That shows your maturity and your coworkers lack of it.

Bunny. Chuck out your television. This programme is an excellent example of Satan’s work. There is nothing like feeling like you are “the only one not doing it” to add to any temptations you may get.

Lol! i dont think I need to anything that drastic - it was actually agood conversation starter and it gave me the chance to open up a dialogue with my friends about their sexual practices - I got the chance to explain that even if they werent interested in stopping having sex for God or religious reasons they should at least consider it for health reasons - the amount of people in my country with STI’s is staggaring and that is just the people who are tested. I got to explain that sleeping with ‘randoms’ or even boyfriends can be dangerous for so many many reasons.

The math kind of scared them - if each of the 20 men my friend had slept with had themselves slept with 10 people that meant that my friend had the possibility of catching an infection from any one of 200 people.

And the other thing is I know my friends want to get married and have kids - (pref in that order) and we got ta talking about how a guy who wants to sleep with you straight away is not goin to be the marrying kind

So whilst I haven’t changed their habits the dialogue was good!

Hi

I saw that programme advertised on TV but I steered clear of it. I always get the feeling that Americans have a stronger sense of community and mutual support than us Brits. I have great admiration that they aren’t afraid to speak openly about God and Christianity etc.

I agree with Joya the UK is very secularised. There is a huge emphasis on “rights” and not enough on the responsibilities of the individual.

The issues of purity, chastity and modesty have often got me down as well but God always helps me back up again 🙂 I was taught this prayer to say morning and night to protect from impurity:

3x Hail Mary

Oh Mary, by the grace of your Immaculate Conception, make my body pure and my soul holy, and preserve me from mortal sin this day/night. Amen

I hope it might help. You are not alone in feeling alone in the UK! 🙂

Drew Mariani a Catholic radio talk show host talks about this. Much of europe is this way. I dont remeber the exact number but in the Netherlands more than half of the children are born to single mothers.
My DH is from the UK and my MIL couldnt believe that my girls still played with dolls. She was commenting on how fast girls there are growing up. I always think things are crazy here!!

It is really lovely to hear about faithful Catholics in the UK. I know you are a minority there. Most C of E people don’t attend church anymore nor do they practice the faith. There is a growing population of atheism in the UK that is worrisome.

I guess I agree that here in the States we do have a sense of community, though we are very divided politically as evidenced by the presidential race approaching in Nov. The left is really gaining strength here and it’s easy to look around and see our moral fabric unraveling as well. I think we have a declining abortion rate, but a quickly rising out of wedlock birth rate and sti rate. I worry about raising my children in this culture.

Don’t leave ! The UK needs you . Have you though about volunteering for a youth ministry ? Someone famous once said something kind of like this " All evil needs is for good men and women to do nothing." Let this terrible TV program motivate you to do something . God Bless
