There are some who believe it causes abortion, right?

What about adultery and divorce…should they be illegal too…since those things go against Church teaching as well?

It would be interesting to know exactly why you’re asking the question.

Aren’t most laws a legislation of morality? We have laws which find murder illegal, theft illegal, arson illegal, etc.

And those things happen to be “God’s teachings” (thou shalt not kill, steal, etc.) which the Church (as it should) makes known. . .not some kind of artificial ‘construct’ that some man-made institution ‘comes up with’ on its own.

It used to be that adultery and divorce were indeed illegal. (Not just in the U.S. but in other countries as well). It could be that they will be illegal again some day (just compare to U.S. prohibition history where alcohol was illegal for what, 12 years, before being legalized again).

As far as ABC --yes, some of the drugs are abortifacient. (read the labels. Ask your OB-GYN)

Just because something is currently ‘legal’ does not necessarily mean it is moral. (check your history book under “Jim Crow laws” for example).

You tell us, hon.

Should things which hurt humanity be upheld because at point X in history some given political entity has decreed them 'legal?"

Is there no ‘absolute’ standard for a moral teaching? Or are things only moral or immoral based on the individual understanding and/or the decision of society? How do you know? Who do you trust? Why?

Are you playing devil’s advocate here or are you being serious? I do think it might be good if adultery was illegal though.

Well, both (if that’s possible). There is so much push to make abortion illegal (and to keep gay marriage illegal) based on Church teaching. I once agreed with it and am now questioning that approach. I just don’t see anyone calling for adultery or divorce or ABC to be illegal.

I don’t think that abortion should be illegal. I think it would cause a lot more problems than it would solve. People would be getting back alley abortions and teenagers would be dying. Not only that, but many children would be born into the world that would be completely neglected and have unfit surroundings. I just think it would cause more harm than good.

Actually…they are already illegal for all Christians…especially for you and me as Christian Catholics…just read the Catechism and the consistent teaching of the Catholic Church for 2,000+ years…why…because Jesus himself said so…as he was sending out the Twelve and the Seventy-two:
**Matthew 10: 32-33; 40 (NIV) Jesus Sends Out the Twelve **
32"Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. 33But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven. 40"He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives the one who sent me.
**Luke 10:16 (NIV)…Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two
**
16"He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me."
So, the late Pope JP-II (the then Saint Peter and one of the Twelve) often said that …the Church only proposes…she never imposes…but his statement is a "trick statement…with a “punch line”…why?..because, what the Catholic Church** proposes is the infallible Truth (on all matters of Faith and Morals)…and that Truth is not something, but someone…a person…Our Lord Jesus Christ…the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords… the Alpha and the Omega…do you or I really, seriously want to say no to that **Person who is the way…the Truth…and the life…**which is the same Truth (on all faith and all morals)…that His Catholic Church is proposing?..
John 14: 6-7 (NIV)
6Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him."

Perhaps you are not aware that artificial birth control was once illegal in some states in the USA. A director from Planned Parenthood was fined in 1961 and eventually took the case to the Supreme Court. Griswold vs. Connecticut law.cornell.edu/supct/html/historics/USSC_CR_0381_0479_ZO.html

BTW, Griswold v. Connecticut set some legal precident cited in Roe v. Wade a little over a decade latter.

They do already. Most abortuaries employ personnel without any healthcare expertise, or minimal at best. Why do you need healthcare in a place where death is? It’s blind surgery, by the way. A large number of women, specifically of the clinic I counsel in front of, come by and tell us how they are herded like cattle in there and are still bleeding from a procedure that may have been done in the 1980s. Many become sterile.

Most people I counsel tell me that the supreme court made it allowed by law, which makes it morally right.

It’s murder at it’s core, and murder of human babes. It should be illegal. It’s not the catholic belief to say, "I’m pro-life, but

God takes care of everyone.

Some of these things were - in fact - illegal many years ago.

As to ABC that are abortifcants, Yes they should be illegal as well for the same reason as surgical abortion. That is, because it is the murder of an unborn child.
Murder is wrong under civil as well as religious codes. Abortion is murder, abortificants are murder as well.

As to the likelihood of this happening, the likleihood is small.
First people must be resensitized to view the death of the unborn as something abhorant.
Good work is being done in this as relating abortion. Perhaps later this same abhorance can be extended to the use of abortificants.

Yes, I think it should be illegal. If it saves one soul, it’s worth it.
and divorce…should they be illegal too…since those things go against Church teaching as well?
I think divorce should be illegal. However, I don’t think we should outlaw adultery, at least not in the prison-term sense. Maybe a fine, but I think with that we should just ecourage repentance.

However, abortion is far more likely to be outlawed soon, and probably more important to outlaw.

Edit: You know what, outlawing adultery doesn’t seem like such a bad idea anymore.

We can decide traffic laws and other societal human laws…but the law against abortion is a Divine Law (Thou shall not Murder…Kill the innocent)…neither you nor I really get a vote on that Divine decision which is now a Divine statute…it has already been made…our job is to accept it and let the Lord who made it worry about all the consequences of us obeying His Law(s)! Do we have Free Will…yes…but using it as we see fit…is all too often much like the Chinese proverb:…“may you live in interesting times…”.

Read what was written @ 3500 years ago about Roe-vs-Wade
Psalm 94 (ESV)
20Can** wicked rulers** be allied with you,
those who frame injustice by statute?
21They band together** against the life** of the righteous
and condemn the innocent to death.
One thing we know for sure about the Lord God…He is adamantly for the “underdog”…for those who suffer from the greatest injustices of the powerful!

Do you think that the Lord God will see it as justice that you and I – if we are pro abortion and do nothing to stop the slaughter of innocent lives – should sit and dine in eternity…at the same table with one or any of the 40+ million aborted babies in our Country?..in poker terms…you and I would be playing the Dead man’s hand!

Just because you Can do something, doesn’t necessarily mean you Should do it.

As one poster stated, “Jim Crow” laws were once perfectly “legal”.
Abortion is murder of the most savage type.

I just don’t see anyone calling for adultery or divorce or ABC to be illegal.
That’s because it’s probaby not as bad as abortion, just by the numbers, and because it’s far less likely to succeed.
I don’t think that abortion should be illegal. I think it would cause a lot more problems than it would solve. People would be getting back alley abortions and teenagers would be dying.
The last year abortion was illegal, approximately 39 people died, in the entire nation.
in 1987, the Commissioner of Health for New York City sent a memo (not intended for the public) to those who provided abortions in his city. In it, he mentioned that between 1981 and 1984 there were 30 women in N.Y.C. who died as a result of their abortions, and 146 in the rest of the U.S.
That’s about 48 a year, on average, more than a 20% increase. It’s not just killing babies.

I am glad that the Jim Crow laws are no longer, but you and the other poster are ignoring the fact that there are a number of other anti-Christian things that are legal in addition to abortion. Should we make them illegal too? If not, why not?

Yes, ABC and adultery should again be illegal, as they were just a few short years ago. For the good of society we must have laws.

Just a few questions to consider:
Do you think that murder should be illegal?
or to put it another way -
Do you think that innocent children should be protected from abuse including murder?
Has legal abortion stopped children being neglected, abused, and living in “unfit surroundings”?

Babies are dying at the rate of 4000 per day in the US in abortion mills.
Children are still neglected, still underfed, still abused etc. in spite of legalized abortion.

As I said in my earlier post. The need is for a change of heart that leads to a change of Law. Not simply a change of law.

Of course they should be. And, in fact they were illegal in the US until quite recently.

Griswold v Conneticut struck down the illegality of contraception and paved the way for the legalization of abortion by inventing a “right” to privacy.

Divorce was illegal except for the most serious of circumstances-- such as spousal abuse, etc, until the advent of “no fault” divorce about 30 years ago. Before that, a spouse had to have cause to sue for divorce and there was the ability to fight divorce. Now with no fault, the innocent party has little to no recourse even if they do not want a divorce. And, yes, adultery was illegal too. It is still a criminal offense in the military and in some states it’s still a civil offense (alienation of affection) which carries with it monetary compesation for the injured party.

So, yes, these things should all be illegal and it is the continued decline of morals and decency in our society and the failure of the government that has brought us to where we are now. The purpose of law in a civil society is the common good-- protection for marriage, families, and children is the foundation of a prosperous society. Our modern government has forgotten that.

However, abortion is far more likely to be outlawed soon, and probably more important to outlaw.
Abortion will never be outlawed in America. This I can guarantee. Republicans say they want to do it, but they never really would. There would be WAY too much opposition. Our society is becoming more and more liberal when it comes to equality. Gay marriage will be legal soon.

Why not just make it illegal to be anything but Catholic? I mean, if we want to push Catholic morals on people, why not just force them to be Catholic, right?
