While I din’t really think that a formal schism will nexessarily take place, I do believe that the more liberal Bishops, Cardinal Mahoney comes to mind at the forefront, will resist and resist strenuously any attempt by the Vatican to implement anything that they, the Bishops, don’t endorse 100%. That has been their path all along and unless the Holy Father decides to really crack down on them, I really don’t see much happening.

If he really cracks down and removes a few from office, then you might see a schism.
I agree. Cardinal Mahoney needs to be reigned in, he’s way off the deep end and unfortunately the leader of the largest diocese in the US.

Arghh…well that explains it: National Catholic Reporter…ughh

One sure way to tell if we’re moving in the right direction, is by how distressed the National Catholic Reporter is.

I completely agree. It wil probably be business as usual (with whatever “reprimand” type conversations going on behind the scenes) or the Holy Father will remove some from office.

How long before Bp. Finn makes them remove “Catholic” from their title?

I hope that Papa Benedict has the intestinal fortitude to make the hard choices and lay some serious smackdown on the USCCB if they resist. Rome really, really, really needs to reassert its Authority over the USCCB. They have led this country astray for far too long.

Andreas: LOL. are you a member of the B Finn fan club too?

we need more like him!

I heartily agree. Its scandalous how so many American Bishops have openly defied the Vatican over the last 30 or 40 years.

I’m certainly jealous of those who can call him their ordinary (though I’m not jealous of some of the situations he inherited that have placed him in the public eye when he works to correct them).

I believe the correct title is National Catholic Distorter:rolleyes:

I think it’s perhaps necessary to give Bishop Skylstad a little bit of credit gasp Although I’ve not yet read the article, I suspect that it fails to mention the wonderful things that are BEGINNING to happen in the Diocese of Spokane.

The bishop, for example, is coming to appreciate the value of Gregorian Chant in the Liturgy. He celebrates at least one Mass per year with the Gonzaga University Gregorian Schola, but chants every Mass at the Cathedral. For the international Serra Club convention we had a Mass featuring Bolivian Baroque ordinaries and the chanted proper of the Mass. Yes, in Latin. Most fitting for an international convention, I’d say. And yes, Bishop Skylstad was the main celebrant.

More and more priests up there are showing an interest in chant and reverently celebrated Masses. Some parishes, including the one where our Chant Mass was celebrated, can even “get away with” kneeling now. Good, orthodox men are entering the diocesan seminary. If all this will be a product of the unity that Bishop Skylstad desires so much, then I say more power to him.

Of course it’s ridiculous that he should still wish to continue to ban the Tridentine Mass in his diocese… but he is, at least, doing some things correctly up there, and I don’t think we should be so quick to villify him. Not yet, anyway.
