they did a drop and run, didnt even knock on my door.

i went out and found a little baggie with the churches name on it.

inside was a religious tract, a new testament, a 3 panel fold out glossy brochure of their church and ministries and a packet of microwave popping corn.

so i got to thinking…

what is the meaning of this popcorn? is it just a gift or is it meant as a parable?

is the unpopped kernel the non-christian, god the microwave and the popped kernel as a born again christian?

does the buttery goodness represent works, because faith without works is dead faith, like plain popcorn doesnt taste to good.

should i email them and ask?

(on a comedic side note: i also wondered if they had knowlege through the jack chick brigade of the albino baptist assassins that i was converting to catholicism and were trying to get me…maybe i wont eat the popcorn) 🙂

Why don’t they come to my house? I like popcorn. Maybe they did not have time to talk because they had to canvas a large area. At least they did not ask you for any money. 🙂

Actually, I like that way of evangelizing. Don’t bug people; entice then with food! 🙂 Some years back, a local Episcopal church canvassed a few nearby neighborhoods with little bags of homemade cookies and pamphlets introducing the church and inviting people to visit. Although I have no numbers to support this, I would guess that this kind of approach would be far more successful in the long run than beating people over the head with Scripture.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with eating popcorn once in a while. I like it myself- it’s light, tasty, fun and makes a nice crunchy sound.

Just remember that as a steady diet, popcorn is not very nutritious. So make sure you eat a good, nutritious meal, and then maybe have some popcorn.

Hey, maybe this could be a parable!🙂

They know your name is Maize and just didn’t know how the corn version is spelled?

Hmmm. I’ve been suspicious of free food from the religious ever since Jonestown. :dts:

I think the amount of butter should tell you how seriously baptist they are. If it’s just dripping with buttery goodness, then you’ll know they’re trying to tell you that baptism is only valid by immersion. If only one kernel in ten tastes like butter, you’ll know they’re okay with sprinkling.

If it’s got normal salt, of course, they’re claiming that they fit Jesus’ description of the salt of the world. If it’s low-salt, though, they’re just a dying congregation trying anything to get Sunday attendance up!

very good:thumbsup:

but your answer will be found in ACTII

hmmmm…popcorn huh? seems to me that the term “rice Christians” was a derogatory phrase used to describe the people Catholic missionaries converted in oriental countries by giving them food and then preaching to them. Catholic missionaries were very successful–guess if the Baptists can’t beat 'em they can join 'em!
Altho it could also be a statement about how entertaining their mega-church might be…big screen tvs and rock bands etc…(if they have a mega-church).
But probably it was just a kind thought—take some time to relax and look at our brochure! I used to give out teabags with my Avon books.

As a new Catholic I am very familiar with protestants ways of getting people to come to there churches to worship. I have to say that some of them are very unique. My question to you is what has your Church or Parish done to go out and tell people about Jesus? What steps are implemented to grow your church and to reach the lost? I have never ever had any Catholic come up to me and invite me to church or seen any Catholic church pass out fliers or popcorn. Why is this? Maybe as Catholics this is something we could start doing to reach the lost people in our communities!
God Bless

i’ve received (but rejected) a candy bar with a label that said “Jesus is God and He loves you!” It was in the wet air so long and there are wild animals out there, not to mention that just because they’re a church (UPC) doesn’t mean they are a licensed confectioner, so no thanks.
Some people ate theirs.
I was once part of a congregation that has a bottled water ministry – tags with religious messages and church info tied to water bottles, handed out at games or sent to disaster victims. It was an attempt to bless people with something needed and refreshing, and also share something valuable in the message on the tag. Many people devoted long hours they could hardly afford coming in and tying them and stacking it up. It was a way to do some good in the world.
I doubt the popcorn was a message – they would surely have explained it in great detail if it were. (“Hi, friend! This free gift of microwave popcorn is a snack – and more than a snack. You see…”)
You can make a parable of it. They are trying to do a good thing by giving this corn, but their corn is all air…Better than nothing, but you can’t live on it…It needs a little work, I suppose.
The glossy brochure is cool; why not thank them in a letter with a brochure of yours enclosed? And a tract or several? And thank them for the NT, and ask what they think certain passages mean, like John 6… Apologize for not being able to reciprocate by mail on the snack food, assure them you’re well-set for food these days and invite one for coffee – at the parish hall.😃

I get visits from our local parish inviting us to come to Mass! Very nice people, with brochures, and a pamphlet outlining some of the basic teachings of the Faith.

I think they’re part of the Legions of Mary. 👍

But alas, no popcorn 😦
