What about the rest of you choir directors, musicians, and laity? Which music settings are you considering?
I must confess I never heard such awful-sounding stuff in my life until I started going through the new masses and the revisions. Some of this music is resoundingly bad…:rolleyes:
 
If it’s so terrible, and everyone agrees it’s terrible, then why not just learn the old the Latin chants and use Gregorian Chant instead? Really, it makes no sense to me. Both the choir and the congregation has to learn new music anyway, and I’m sure there are some people who at the very least kinda sorta remember the Latin chants, which is more than what can be said about the new Mass settings, so why not just use Latin???:confused:

I don’t know how to describe it, but all the mass settings seem to have a particular style to them.

Are people expected to sing along or does the choir mostly sing?
 
Actually, the Mass of the Holy Trinity at least has some reverence to it. I can accept that setting. It still cannot “hold a candle” to the EF Masses.
 
yeah id say mass of the holy trinity does have some reverence to it and it is actually quite nice especially the gloria

especially when its compared to those stupid bi-lingual settings that sound like a mariachi concert

i mean seriously if St. cecelia heard the mass in her honor, she’d be rolling over in her grave
 
It’s extremely melodramatic.

But, very much more appropriate, and better overall, than most stuff being churned out by these “composers” these days.
 
We are using Mass of Christ the Savior.. It was picked because it works across the various “types” of Masses, the contemporary and more traditional SATB choirs.

For Advent we have a different one that I really like. It was written by one of our piano players. It sounds kine of Renaissancey with more of a minor key.

I do think it is kind of hard to picture what a lot of the masses will actually sound like in my parish. When you hear them online they always have a full orchestra and big choir. We usually just have a piano and a pretty small choir, so it never quite sounds the same. 🤷

I have to admit that I’m obsessed with the Lamb of God from the heritage mass. I hear they are redoing that mass with the new translation.
 
The Archdiocese of Indianapolis has chosen the Storrington Mass as the official Mass setting. We can do other mass settings as a parish alone, but when you have archdiocesan ceremonies, mass’s ect. My parish will do the Storrington Mass starting out. Hopefully they will do something else, I am not a big fan. But then again I will probably be in Seminary next year so it what the parish does won’t effect me.

I personally like any on the new settings that sounds great with an organ. I am a big huge Organ fan for everything in church. But unfortunately it only catches dust.
 
We chose the Belmont Mass to start with. We are also going to learn the Gloria Simplex as our cathedral has chosen that one of the ones to use at diocesan masses.
 
I think we will be going with the revised “Community Mass” by Richard Proulx. It’s up to our music director, though. Here is the Sanctus (it’s not with the revised translation). I do like the Community Mass.

Honestly, though, I just have been underwhelmed by most of what has come out and promoted so far. It sometimes makes me wish I were talented enough to be a composer. The recordings haven’t done much to sell them well either. What is it with publishing houses’ recordings? The singing is just so blah, that it either makes everything really saccharine, really cheesy or just incredibly uninspiring. There is no depth or soul. Of course, one should always look at the actual compositions and see what can truly be done with the music itself, but really, those recordings are such turn-offs. They even make some of the most beautiful choral music sound like the most uninspired, boring music around, like they don’t give a you-know-what about the prayer and words within the music.

I also do like Proulx’s arrangement of the Schubert Deutsche Messe. We would use it for special feast days or during the Christmas season and it sounded beautiful with just organ alone as well. The only problem, though, was the Agnus Dei, but he reset it with the correct text before his passing when he revised it.

Ideally, I’d love to have something like this at mass more often. I would much rather pray listening to this while at mass. My previous parish used to do this mass by Victoria, actually, and it was so much more spiritually inspiring to just listen and allow it to permeate through my soul.

My husband and I had that above Palestrina mass sung for our nuptial mass, so I guess this is where I sit idealistically-speaking, although I don’t expect it and would never require it at most parishes. I do have to be realistic as well. 😛

Thankfully we are doing Heritage Mass now. It’s my favorite setting. I have a bad feeling that we are going to be learning Mass of Creation in October when the choir season resumes.
