So what can't we do on Sunday?

And to revive an old thread, what about using public transportation on a Sunday (for purposes of recreation, like meeting a friend or going into a city or a different part of town)

Would it be sinful to use public transportation on a Sunday?

Pax,

no.

This is 3 years old…why not start a new thread?

Don’t make the bus drivers work…walk! It would be good for the heart, leg muscles, etc. Plus, it would be free. You would burn calories, too.

I could start a new thread, but…

Okay, let’s say it’s another part of the county and too far to reasonably walk (and people lack the ability to drive for themselves). I’m planning on meeting a friend this Sunday and she’ll be taking the train here most likely. Anyhow, I was interested for myself as well.

I tend to be scrupulous,…

Apparently.

If you could not tell by my smilie, I was kidding.

Take the bus.
I’m sorry! I misinterpreted it. 😦

It’s so easy to misinterpret things over the internet… :o

This is true. Yeah, I was kidding about walking for miles. I think there is nothing wrong with taking the bus.

In my case, it is the train, possibly, not the bus, but…
If I could drive, there would be a bigger case for me saving someone the trouble, but given the circumstances…

I was reading the Catechism from the Vatican’s web site

“2185 On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are to refrain from engaging in work or activities that hinder the worship owed to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s Day, the performance of the works of mercy, and the appropriate relaxation of mind and body.123 Family needs or important social service can legitimately excuse from the obligation of Sunday rest. the faithful should see to it that legitimate excuses do not lead to habits prejudicial to religion, family life, and health.”

and

“2187 Sanctifying Sundays and holy days requires a common effort. Every Christian should avoid making unnecessary demands on others that would hinder them from observing the Lord’s Day. Traditional activities (sport, restaurants, etc.), and social necessities (public services, etc.), require some people to work on Sundays, but everyone should still take care to set aside sufficient time for leisure. With temperance and charity the faithful will see to it that they avoid the excesses and violence sometimes associated with popular leisure activities. In spite of economic constraints, public authorities should ensure citizens a time intended for rest and divine worship. Employers have a similar obligation toward their employees.”

I suppose “public services” would include “public transport” and I guess that meeting a friend or date on Sunday to spend a day together wouldn’t be intrinsically wrong, as long as we remember GOD. It’s a feast day, so we should enjoy it, right?

The idea behing the Sabbath is to give yourself a day for rest to take care of yourself and pray to God.

During Jesus’ times everyone or at least almost everyone did manual labor and therefore neeeded that day of rest to recuperate and pray.

In today’s world when many of us have professional careers, I would think the opposite should be true where the Sabbath should be used to get the much needed exercise that we need.

The only thing I believe is essential is to give God His one hour a week on Sunday and the rest of Sunday can be used for whatever. However, if one does work on Sunday, they should be able to take another day off.

Furthermore, it is still ideal for the Sunday to be the day of choice to take off and give to God. So for those in the professional world, Sunday should be the day of exercise/rest/prayer. Likewise the same is true for those with normal week schedules. But there is nothing wrong with having a job which requires work on a Sunday if there are other days off and one has time to meet the obligation to go to Church,

I went to an indie music festival last Sunday and feel conflicted about it. Spent much of the day there, had a few beers, and listened to the music. I feel like this is the kind of atmosphere I shouldn’t be in anyway, but on Sunday in particular. I did go to Mass as well that day. I’m not sure if this is something worth confessing or not. Is listening to and dancing to rock music necessarily sinful? That the music festival was at an old gothic church that is no longer in use adds another facet to this. I know it would have been better if I spent the day praying and studying, but was I doing anything particularly wrong, I don’t know.

You went to Mass and then you went to a music festival. Talk to your priest about your concerns and be careful of scrupulosity. I’m not quite sure what kind of atmosphere you are referring to. Unless it was the drink, drug, wild sex because we are all at a rock festival kind of atmosphere. That would be one to avoid.

Did you have a good time? 😃 Sometimes we just have to relax and enjoy and not worry so much.

It’s always good to pray and study and there are another six days a week available for that as well. 🙂
