What is the National Catholic Reporter all about? I often hear severe criticism about it, but I am not sure if that is because the criticism is coming from more conservative or sensitive ears. Is this news organization concerning at all?

Sometimes I see posts there that seem to be directly contrary to church teaching (for example, women’s ordination). And today there is a homepage post criticizing Pope Francis’ attitude towards women. Many of the comments are highly negative, critical, and sometimes just means towards the church.

In what sense is this a good Catholic organization? And if it is not, why? Do they have a mission?

It’s an independent publication not connected to the Catholic Church.

As such, it has opinions that might not be the teachings of the Church.

It’s often confused with the National Catholic Register, which is affiliated with EWTN and does present an authentic Catholic perspective.

National Catholic Reporter has a history of publishing articles which are intentionally provocative - anything with the words bishop, gay, abortion, etc. in the title usually suffices.

The idea is to drive readership without regard to whether what they publish is actually truthful.

They get a lot of stuff wrong and it is sometimes intentional.

People who don’t know, think it’s Catholic and thus gives Catholics a bad, incorrect name. Every society has organizations that misunderstand and therefor mislead. Many posters here do right in pointing out the misrepresentation of Catholocism that that NCReporter promulgates.

National Catholic Reporter was told by the bishop of its diocese, Bishop Helmsing, in **1968 **to quit using the name ‘Catholic’ in its name. The admonition was later repeated by Bishop Finn. Naturally, the newspaper ignored it.

It is to authentic Catholic media as Fox News and MSNBC are to authentic journalism.

Quite simply, they are a dissident publication, intentionally misleading Catholics from authentic Catholicism to push a social agenda.

I read the National Catholic Reporter often, as do most of my RC friends and colleagues. I find that the level of reporting is excellent. It does speak to progressive Christians, but they know their audience and intentionally write to it.

I enjoy their comments on peace and justice issues, on spirituality, and of course their take on what is happening in the larger Church.

I watch Rachel Maddow on MSNBC too. She is extremely intelligent and presents her topics in a way I appreciate and respect. Same with NCR. I can appreciate those who are more conservative wanting to read (and watch) people who agree with their points of view. But there IS a difference between solid writing and reporting and poor journalism. Please don’t mistake quality for perspective.

Yes, I have seen this first hand, not on CAF, but mainly on FB, I have seen countless posts of people ‘liking’ and sharing supposed quotes by Pope Francis that are contrary to scripture, the most recent was one that had him saying “its fine not to attend mass at church anymore, as long as you have God in your heart”…well, some of us can recognize that did not come from the pope, but the problem is, many others do not and think he did say this, that why so many ‘like’ and share it.

It seems like this is being done intentionally and drawing a lot of people into the lie.

I think this is why Pope francis is so popular with the secular crowd, many of them think he is out to change the old outdated beliefs of the CC. the quotes and statements are not real, but in reality, the damage they are doing is very real, so they are successful at the agenda they are trying to push.

Check out the condemnation that Bishop Helmsing gave of National Catholic Reporter in 1968: greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=00Cofv

Here is an excerpt:
IN AS MUCH as the National Catholic Reporter does not reflect the teaching of the Church, but on the contrary, has openly and deliberately opposed this teaching. I ask the editors in all honesty to drop the term “Catholic” from their masthead. By retaining it they deceive their Catholic readers and do a great disservice to ecumenism by being responsible for the false irenicism of watering down Catholic teachings.
The following link discusses an editorial in the National Catholic Reporter from 2012 which was titled in NCR, “The Ordination of Women Would Correct an Injustice.”

crisismagazine.com/2012/the-catholic-lefts-latest-call-for-the-ordination-of-women

It is absolutely reprehensible that NCR would publish such a thing but look what Bishop Helmsing said about NCR 48 years ago.
