So what topics would not be divisive?

And who would want to talk about them? I have noticed that some of the subject lines seem to be designed to stir up controversy. I also get the impression from some posters that they are looking for a fight. There seem to be some people who come here for the purpose of attacking a traditional approach to Catholicism and some to attack non-traditional approaches. Is there more to this sub-forum than fighting?
 
People are petty, we just like to fight amongst ourselves. LOL 😃

It doesn’t have to be religion, it could be anything and there will be endless debates about it somewhere in the world. I guess its pride, people want to uphold that what they believe in or adhere to as the best. Part of human nature that we do not want to admit we settled for second best, or that something we do not have or adhere to is better or even equal to something that we have.
 
I’m just here trying to understand and sometimes I find the controversy and arguments actually help because people end up raising questions I myself have, and/or it gives me an opportunity to voice a concern I might have that I might not feel comfortable voicing in a thread where everyone is agreeing with no dissension (?).

PS: My reading comprehension is not very good. Haha. You’d think I wasn’t a native English speaker.
 
I don’t know if it so much the topics, although I will admit that they do not help. In general, I have noticed people unusually argumentative, extremely touchy and more than willing to get in your face for the slightest thing. I started noticing this about ten years ago, and I have chalked it up to the nature of the times in which we live, which aren’t good.

Well said. It also appears that some people provide topics as Bait to decide who to concentrate their attacks on. It has been going on here as long as I have been here.
As if we dont know what they are up to.

I’m amazed that people fall for it every time too. :confused: And notice how the person that starts the thread disappears once the fighting has commenced. Job well done! Onto the next!! 👍

Haven’t watched television in two decades but I believe it. My sister once told me what her psychology professor told her back in the stone age - put two toddlers in a play pen together and they will, sooner or later, begin to fight.

It’s called Original Sin.

REALLY?

Even in some of the threads that have degenerated into bitter battles I’ve always assumed the OP was genuine in their quest for information and/or opinions. :\

Very true. I haven’t even been here a wet weekend (since Aug 1st to be precise) and I already know who the trolls and troublemakers are. Maybe it’s because I’m Irish but I don’t take too kindly to being bullied. So I stand up to them in my own way.
Initially, my gut reaction was that these people really have nothing better to be doing with their time. However, on deeper reflection, I wonder if said people (and I refer here to atheists et al) are not truly seeking a way back to Faith?

I think they are most of the time, but I find it hard to believe that something like “why do traditionalists violate canon law?” means to do anything other than make trouble. (In this particular case, the canon law they allegedly break did not exist.)
 
By the way, the question in the subject line is not rhetorical. I really am trying to think of topics to discuss here that are less likely to be divisive.

I don’t really know enough about Traditional Catholicism to give an intelligent answer. I mean seriously. I have been to only a handful of EF Masses, and devotions like Liturgy of the Hours are a total mystery to me. I know that I am intrigued and would like to learn more, but i get so discouraged when it turns into a fight. I know that I have been divisive in the past, but that is something that I am working on changing.

You know, sometimes some people throw jokes around and the other party responds with a joke. Just goes to show that with a little humor and a step back from being too serious about any topic can change the tone of conversation. People have to realize that while some of the issues here being discussed is important, we shouldn’t set our seriousness to full, and allow for some lightheartedness to come in and cool down the discussions.

I think we’d see more topics that truly fit here if not for the constant re-hash of the same divisive topics. Imagine all the lurkers and guests that drop by and see all the bickering. They may have a question or topic they’d like to discuss, but may not post because of the lack of Charity seen on threads. I’m guilty of it.

And once the divisive topics get going, they stay at the top of the first page. I find it humorous when I see a one star rating on a thread. So many threads don’t get rated, and new members and guests may see the one star, thinking it means a good thread. Any amount of stars draw attention to the thread.

Anyhow, I’d like to see more topics on little known traditional devotions, interesting events in Church History, and the like.

An example might be a discussion of the difference in the Mendicant Orders and their contributions to Roman Catholic spirituality.
