So....when do you get to call your family LARGE?

In about 23 weeks I am due with our fourth.

I was wondering something as I read the front and back of the t-shirt Blest One posted in another thread.

Will we be a “large” family?

I realize that by some standards on this forum, probably not.

However, in society-at-large…I’ve already heard us referred to as a “large” family with #4 on the way.

I realize that “large” today is not really where “large” twenty-forty years ago was…but wondered what you all thought.

Basically, would I get flamed around here (on this forum) for referring to my family of four kids as “large”? 😉 😃

I came from a family with 3 living children, and I always thought my family was small. 😉

So, my current personal “break down” goes like this:

Small - 0 to 3 kids
Medium - 4 to 7 kids
Large - 8 or more kids

I am probably fairly generous in my category distinctions, though.

Oh, and no flames from me. 😃

If anyone flames you or the OP on this, they will need to flame me as well.

According to modern secular society, 4 children is irresponsibly large. So if that is what the secular world is saying, then what you are doing is on the right track! 👍

I pretty much agree with this breakdown. 🙂

Even if the greenies, contracepting pseudo-Catholics, and liberals insist that people who have more than one, and maybe two, children are irresponsible.

When will you be a large family?
When you have more than 1.87 children if you live in the U.S., or
more than 2.03 if you’re in Idaho.😃

Congratulations on Baby #4!!!

I have two boys and two girls, but I come from a family of 14, seven boys and yes, seven girls, we both have a little catching up to do, only 10 more to go.

I’m guessing my mother and father didn’t watch much TV, come to think of it, there wasn’t one. 😉
 
I think of large family as 5+ children.

Or when the combined weight of it’s members tops 1500 lbs. - whichever comes first. 😃

This is about how I would break it down. Possibly 3-5 might be “medium”, 6+ large. Probably b/c I come from a family of 6 kids and I think we were a big family! We were a noisy mob anyway LoL And I’m planning on “medium” 🙂

But hey- call it big if you want! Compared to most North American famililes, it is!
 
When you need at least two cars to transport them to Sunday Mass. 🙂
 
I come from a family with 4 kids (all of us are around college/high school age now), and growing up, people were always astounded at how big our family was. On this forum, where many people utilize NFP and have way more than four kids, your family would probably be considered small. But to society in general, where there are many more 1 and 2 child families than 4 or 5 child families, then yes, your family would be considered large.
 
By the “world’s” standards I think large is when they tack on the manditory 15% gratuity for parties of 6 or more and that is your whole family:D Which is where we are right now 2 grownups and 4 kiddos
 
I have 2 brothers and 2 sisters, I still think its a small family. Growing up there was 11 people in the house, I thought that was about normal.

My mum has 18 brothers and sisters. Thats large, you still have catching up to do guys and gals 😛 !
 
In my opinion, you’re got a “large” family when you’ve got five or more kids.

(Or when everybody in the family weighs more than 200 pounds. :D)

Oh MY! All one mother?! Any twins or adoptees?!!!

19 kids isn’t just a large family, that’s gargantuan. They’ve even got the Duggars beat…!!!

Your breakdown reminds me of statistics I saw somewhere on average family size around the world. After reading them, I felt a deeper kinship towards women in Africa and other parts of the “third world”. The average number of children born to women in several parts of the world was seven.

I dunno, hehe, it is funny how it varies… I have had people ask “Are all of those yours?”, and I only have three…
Growing up I always thought we, 4 siblings, were a small family, so I am not sure where I would draw the line, not that it matters that much lol. Don’t worry, hopefully no one will throw flames your way for calling your 4 kid family large, lol.
 
We have three children (so far), but when the godmother of our daughter emails/writes to me she adds “I love to hear about your little family.” And SHE has only two children. I don’t get it.
 
It’s not the greatness of the numbers that matters, but how open the heart is behind those numbers.

Just remember a family of eight can use contraception with the best of them. So, are they “larger” than a couple who has only two children but has miscarried six more besides? Or how about the completely infertile couple who will never be blessed, but would “welcome them as they come” if only given the chance. Do they not share the same largeness of heart as those parents of twelve in the “welcome them as they come” category, even if their total count is in fact zero?

Just something to think about for those who don’t really fall in a numbers category. 🙂

No, sorry – twenty may be more than nineteen, but nineteen kids is absolutely NOT nothing!

And two cars to get to Mass really depends on the car. Are we talking school buses, or Miatas here?

She probably means “little” as in “young.” I doubt if she means anything offensive by it.
 
I agree with your breakdown, mostly because although many families have 1 - 3 children, most of us grew up in families that had more so we don’t think of 3 as “large”.

Oh, and we don’t take two cars to Sunday Mass because we usually send at least two walking to avoid it!
