So....when do you get to call your family LARGE?

Which brings to mind the really funny scene at the car dealership a few years ago. DH & I were debating over the 12-seater vs. the 15-seater van. I pushed strongly for the 12-seater because of fuel efficiency and easier parking. Plus it should have plenty of room-- both of us plus ten kids. DH leaned over and whispered conspiratorially, “But what if we have 11 kids???”

I figured we’d cross that bridge when we got to it.

I say 1-3 = small, 4 = medium, 5+ = large. At least that’s how it felt to me when we hit 5, which meant full occupancy on a mini-van… We have 8 now, and I’m itching for 9.

for reference, I have 3 brothers and 3 sisters…so 7 in total…although not all 7 of us ever lived under the same roof (Dad had last two with my step-mom).

I would definitely put our family as “medium” by Catholic standards. But I have gotten more “you’re crazy” and “so are you going to be DONE after this one?” with this pregnancy that I was starting to wonder if people who I encounter daily thought we must be a large family with 4 kids.

I was also thinking that we would still have a seat available in the minivan even after #4 is born…so who knows!?!>

I have a slightly different breakdown (blame McDonalds):

Small - 0 to 2 children
Medium - 3 to 4 children
Big - 5 to 6 children
Large - 7+
(super jumbo - more than 10) Ha! God bless them.

My parents had three children, including me. I always thought our family was “normal”. I think at least three children is the real starting point for a “family.”

Congrats on the baby too! Life is always a blessing directly from God. Never be afraid to have more children if you have determined that you can provide and care for them; and give each of them adequate attention.

Oh MY! All one mother?! Any twins or adoptees?!!!

19 kids isn’t just a large family, that’s gargantuan. They’ve even got the Duggars beat…!!!

All one mother and father, no multiple births, no adoptees. Big Irish Catholic family, you can imagine what the last reunion looked like. I think I have more than 80 cousins on my mother’s side of the family. And on my father’s (English) side? One aunt, two cousins. Family tree was a little lopsided

I was wondering something as I read the front and back of the t-shirt Blest One posted in another thread.

Will we be a “large” family?

I realize that by some standards on this forum, probably not.

However, in society-at-large…I’ve already heard us referred to as a “large” family with #4 on the way.

I realize that “large” today is not really where “large” twenty-forty years ago was…but wondered what you all thought.

Basically, would I get flamed around here (on this forum) for referring to my family of four kids as “large”?

Hahaha… Around here we are considered a medium family with 4 kids around the parish and stuff but go to McDonalds or Walmart and people comment on my large family… so I guess it all depends… definitely no flames here

4 is large enough to be called large. No one will argue with you in public about that.

(We opted for the 15-passenger van. We’re up to 8 kids and some of them are getting quite large; so it’s more comfortable on long trips if they aren’t crammed in. Because there’s no way we can afford to fly! It gets 9 mpg city, 15 hwy so I use the auxiliary vehicle as much as possible)
