I just say, “I hope so.” If they express amazement, then I tell them that I’m the eldest of eleven, so I know how good it is to have siblings and don’t want my children to miss out. People usually agree with that statement and back off and start talking about the good things about chidlren then.
The worst backhander I’ve heard about was when my friend asked her brother to be godfather to her third child while he was over for dinner. He put down his knife and fork and told her, “There are too many people in the world. I could never be godfather to a third child.”

Congrats!!!
Tell these people: the more the merrier. I would.

We just had #5. People are shocked when we say we are open to more.
I agree I choose kids over dollars!

We have 10 kids. None of them, not even the first, not even adjusted to 1980 prices-- none of them cost eleven thousand their first year.

We have 10 kids, age 5 through 31. I couldnt ever afford a single one of them ( despite the fact none of them cost me a grand per month) but so far five of them have reached adulthood. Nobody starved. Nobody froze. No child labor. There are a few degrees in there, one discerning the priesthood, 2 happily married.

In the beginning i breastfed and never knew what a breast pump was. I used cloth diapers and ( true) i washed them in the bathtub on w washboard. My babies wore clothes from hand-ons, second hand stores and church basement sales.

Im still poor and im still raising kids.

A choice between dollars or kids? I choose the kids.
:amen:

“There are too many people in the world. I could never be godfather to a third child.”
Why is it that people with this mentality don’t follow through on their philosophy and subtract themselves from the equation?

Ten children to give you a laugh a day for several decades,
to give you a reason to care what comes out of your mouth
when you drop something on your foot,
to give you grandchildren to adore,
to take care of you in your old age,
to live the faith and pray for you when you are long gone,
to be jewels in your crown for eternity:
Priceless
i wish i cared more about the words that come out of my mouth when i drop something on my foot! but what you write is ever so true-- i already have been given grandchildren im nutso crazy about. i already have been given children who pray for me.

“There are too many people in the world,” said one of the people in the world. “but i’'m not one of the too many.” thinks he to himself.

Have as many kids as you want and can pay for, but you may want to ask yourself if you want to be retired when the next child graduates.
My Grandparents had my Mother’s youngest brother a few months before my Grandpa retired…

I always tell people who ask us this,“We take what God gives us.”

I can definitely understand your nervousness though about the age issue. How old is too old to have another child? My husband is 10 years older than me, so I may still be fertile when he is in his 50’s. We were not Catholic when we got married and so we figured 2 maybe 3 kids would be it. Now here we are expecting our 6th. My grandmother told me not to worry about it, her father was 18 years older than her mom and she’s not warped because of it. That was back in the 1920’s though, and I think it was more common for older men to marry younger women and still have kids.
As I said earlier. My Grandpa was in his 60s when he and my Grandma had their 8th and last child. He was 20some years older than her and they had a very happy marriage with well adjusted children!

You remind me the quote from Galatians, where Paul uses hyperbole to refer to those who are upsetting converts concerning circumcision: As for those agitators, I wish they would go the whole way and emasculate themselves! (Gal 5:12)

Paul was not actually advocating for their self-mutiliation, and neither do we* literally *want people who are overly worried about overpopulation to commit suicide!

Lol, indeed it is merely a device (hyperbolic device) to point out the absurdity of the thinking.
