I’m a little confused by mention of “social salvation” in the journal First Things. Edward T. Oakes, S.J. asks, “How did we come to conceive the Christian project as a selfish search for salvation which rejects the idea of serving others?” This whole concept is new to me, as I have always desired as close a personal relationship to Christ as is possible.

There is no contradiction here. Remember, you are a member of the Mystical Body of which Christ is the head; nothing done in Christ is done alone. The purpose of intensifying your personal relationship to Jesus is to become more and more like Him. And who is He but love? And what is love but service?

Thank you for your response Blackrobe. You are absolutely correct, of course. And the more I think about it, the more I realize how valid the idea of “social salvation” is. Part of my confusion is that I was raised a Protestant, and did not convert to the Catholic Church until age 58 - and part of my reasoning was to become closer to Christ. This whole exchange is helping to accomplish that.
