The federal government is projected to pay out $29 billion more in social security benefits than it receives from taxes this year. It has already taken $2.5 trillion from the social security trust fund. But do not worry, we have IOU’s from the Treasury Department backed by the full faith & credit of our government. Our wonderful government social justice at work in America.

I’m not quite sure what you mean. Would you be willing to explain a bit more?

It seems the be the fault of irresponsible politicians. During the past 30 years, neither of the two major political parties in the US have been willing to enact policies of fiscal conservatism.

I don’t think there is any social justice in social security. It is a welfare program where the government takes from people who work and gives to people who don’t work. A large fraction of the receivers are the able bodied who could work, but choose not to. If they were young we would call them lazy, but it seems to be politically incorrect to call an able bodied 62 year old person on the dole lazy.

We put more trust in the government than God. We believe the government can manage programs effectively. Has the government managed any social justice program well? Also, say someone dies at the age of 65 & anyone born after 1960 can not get full benefits until the age of 67. All of the money the government has taken from that person, where is it going? It is not going to their family. It is not going to a charity of their choosing. It is staying with the government. Is not the government stealing from them? I am saying I put more trust in the individual along with private organizations & charities than I do our federal government.

If I buy an insurance policy and I don’t make a claim is the insurance company stealing from me?

If I buy an insurance policy, I have chosen to buy that policy. I have not chosen to be part of social security. I would rather keep the money for my own retirement, my family or a charity of my choice.

I would rather not have to pay for a war in Iraq or Afganistan (I am not necessarily against the war, just paying for it). I don’t have a choice, and there is a good chance that I benefit little from the war, but that doesn’t necessarily make the war immoral.

I come from a poor family. Every one of my elderly relatives gets by on their social security. They all worked hard all their lives, some still work part time. Others, like my mom, are too disabled to work (plus she’s 79). If it wasn’t for social security, they’d have nothing. They are not “on the dole” - they paid into SS. Millions of othe elderly people are in this same situation. Personally, I find a program designed to look after the elderly who have worked hard all their lives to be highly ethical and reasonable. My mom grew up in the Depression, her generation was the first to graduate from high school. There were no retirement plans, 401Ks other other alternatives. Most of these folks didn’t even have bank accounts - it was a hand to mouth existence. Yet none were ever on welfare. They all worked, long hours and sometimes backbreaking labor. To have you insult so many of our elderly hard working people smacks of ignorance and just plain meanness.

You really think that an able bodied 62 year old ought to get checks from the government when he could be working and earning his own way?

Wouldn’t you rather have all the money you paid in social security taxes in your own bank account instead of the federal government? What about our own responsibility or are we going to depend on the government for everything? Whatever happened of the family taking care of each other instead of looking to the government to take care of our parents. What about the kids taking care of their own parents? We like to have extra spending money instead of first taking care of our own responsibilities along with our family. We want the government to do it for us.

Different taxes. The social security tax was supposed to be for our retirement. General taxes can be spent on almost anything. But going back to my first post, the government believes it can take social security taxes for general spending. That is the problem.

“Go to the ant, O sluggard, and consider her ways, and learn wisdom: Which, although she hath no guide, nor master, nor captain, Provideth her meat for herself in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou rise out of thy sleep? Thou wilt sleep a little, thou wilt slumber a little, thou wilt fold thy hands a little to sleep:” (Proverbs 6:6-10)

We are going to sleep as a nation, instead of looking to the Lord first, too many of us are looking to the government.
