Shouldn’t society as a whole attack the teen pregnancy problem at the source - the influence? Shouldn’t we go against all the sex-related movies and music that poison the children’s minds? If the kids don’t the ‘the talk’ from their parents, where are they going to turn to find information? Their environment - the internet, music, television shows, movies, etc. Even look at their clothes. EVERYTHING IS SHOWING. There are even Catholic-raised children that wear highly inappropriate clothing. Anyone agree? Sorry if this turned into a mini rant. :o

Nah, mate.

You give a 17 year old a condom and his mind turns to sex.

You give a 17 year old anything? His mind turns to sex.

It won’t work. Unless it somehow becomes really socially taboo like it used to be, you’re going to have a job on that one, mate.

Personally as a Catholic, I’m offended at the content children see these days. If a girl in the 50’s wore the same clothes high school aged girls today wear, she would be called a prostitute. Clothing and many television shows and movies are filled with sexual references are jokes. They make sex seem like it’s some kind of hobby.

It’s never too late… but this current culture is a dirty fishbowl. All you can be is a good model of the behaviors and actions that SHOULD be.

Society doesn’t need to do ANYTHING, sounds like government needs to do something… WELL you know what government is doing about it… Contraception!!

I’d say conversation about compassion and pregnancy… Talk about women’s role in society, each to be nurturing and empathetic (as their strengths…) And for men, protective and providing…

some more chat from parents about your purpose to prepare to be a good asset to a family… either husband or wife… would be good, and adding in there are celebates as well…

What’s YOUR role? I’m but a young adult lady who works a cleaning job and has little authority delegated over my little brother from (separated) parents…

stay married if you are… get remarried to your child’s parent if you ran out… these are important. Love your spouse more than the child.

ACT with CONFIDENCE. Pray.

I know a woman who loved her spouse more than her children. She ran off and left her two kids, because her husband was bored with them.

Society doesn’t need to fix the problem. PARENTS need to fix the problem. Don’t expect society to raise your kids by banning stuff that is clearly making people a LOT of money. It’s simply not going to happen until demand dries up-and that will only happen because of the parents.

And before you say it can’t be done and throw up your hands in despair-there are families all over the world that are already doing it. I’m sure a lot of 'em post right here. It’s hard work, no doubt-but in the end isn’t it worth it?

Are you suggesting that’s a good thing? Calling someone a prostitute just because you don’t approve of her clothes?

I know one that loved her drug dealer more and she ran off with him-leaving her 2 kids to be raised by their father and the rest of the family. Luckily, the family she left them with made a commitment to raise good moral children who became good moral adults. It’s really all about choices that people make in regard to the welfare of the children in their lives.

Don’t be silly. The good thing is that this hyper-sexualized stuff was considered deviant and bad rather than main stream.

I am surprised (who am I kidding, no I’m not) that no one has considered the possibility of a teenage grassroots movement encouraging holiness. We as teens might be down, but we’re not out.

Way to stereotype friend. I am a 17 year old male who wishes to remain celibate to his deathbed or until I am wed depending on my path in life.

A Parent’s relationship with their kids actually flourish most when they love their spouses before their children (since it is conforming most closely to the natural order of family life). On the other hand, if a parent loved their kids before their spouse, what would happen when the kids moved out?

With regards to the topic, I believe that the root of the problem is that young people just don’t have God in their hearts anymore. We can (and should) address symptoms such as immodesty, but at the end of the day the solution to society’s problem is the same as it was for Jonah and Nineveh (that is for everyone to repent and give themselves to God with utter abandon!)

A wise man once said…

Ma’am, I’m not saying you’re a prostitute… but you are wearing the uniform.

Love your spouse more than the child.
Unfortunately, if I had chosen to do that, my child would have grown up with an alcoholic, neglectful, womanizing father. I never set out to be a single mom and leave my husband, but I loved my child enough to NOT allow her to grow up in that environment. (Please note, this was after MANY attempts to get my spouse help for his addictions.)

Maybe. Children will react differently to these things, although sex probably has reached the point where it’s viewed as a hobby, or just a leisurely activity. There also seems to be this mentality amongst some teenagers that it’s cool to lose your virginity as early on as possible, even before the age of consent.

EDIT: Well, I’ve made it seem a lot worse than it is, but that’s the mentality of some teenagers. Maybe they’re just the stupid ones, and any babies or STDs they pick up is just an example of natural selection.

EDIT AGAIN: Ah, oopsy, double post.

Nope. I remember when I was a teen in the 1990s, and most of my siblings are teens today… That was and still is the thinking of a majority of teenagers. Teenphilo1, you’re in the minority. (but that is a good thing.)

To all those who think that the promiscuity genie can’t be put back in the bottle, check this out:

Judaism’s Sexual Revolution: Why Judaism Rejected Homosexuality
When Judaism demanded that all sexual activity be channelled into marriage, it changed the world. The Torah’s prohibition of non-marital sex quite simply made the creation of Western civilization possible.
catholiceducation.org/articles/homosexuality/ho0003.html

We’ve been here before people. Nothing that is happening today is new. The pendulum has simply swung back.
